Syfy Greenlights 'Death Race 2000' Style Throwback 'Blood Drive'

Anytime Syfy greenlights an awesome sounding TV show, I have to take it with a grain of salt. They don’t have the greatest track record of late. The Expanse is based on one of the best sci-fi books I’ve read in recent years, so I’m trying to be optimistic. And now they’ve given the go ahead to another promising series, Blood Drive, a ‘70s-inspired, grindhouse-esque show about a badass car race.

Set in a post-apocalyptic future, from this description, this sounds more than a little like Death Race 2000, which is something I can definitely get behind. Here’s the synopsis:

Los Angeles' last good cop who must join a twisted and bloody cross-country death race that includes cars powered by blood and a dangerous female character who sees people as little more than fuel.

“Grindhouse” style projects have been all over the place over the last few years, since Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s double feature of Death Proof and Planet Terror, with varied results. But Blood Drive sounds like it could be a fun, bloody, exploitation style addition to your TV viewing schedule. We’ll have to see how it plays out.
