'Elevation' (2024) Movie Review

Elevation, the new sci-fi adventure from The Adjustment Bureau director and Bourne Ultimatum writer George Nolfi, is fine. That’s the most accurate way to put it. It’s a solidly executed creature feature with an intriguing if underdeveloped hook, charismatic leads, moderate tension, and a crisp visual style. It gets right in, does its business, and wraps things up in less than 90 minutes. Is it thought provoking, innovative, or particularly memorable? No. But it’s entertaining and compelling enough if that’s all you’re after.

'Synchronic' (2019) Movie Review

In the wake of movies like Spring and The Endless, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have become a must-watch filmmaking duo. Their latest, Synchronic, follows two New Orleans paramedics, Steve (Anthony Mackie) and Dennis (Jamie Dornan), who find themselves on the front lines in a battle against a new designer drug that has an especially unexpected side effect, time travel.

Synchronic, the duo’s follow up to The Endless, has been one of our most anticipated movies since it made the festival rounds last year. 'Point Blank' Trailer: Frank Grillo And Anthony Mackie Team Up In This Remake Of A Baddass French Action Movie

UPDATED: Not to be confused with classic 1967 Lee Marvin movie of the same name, the 2010 French action-thriller Point Blank has been remade a startling number of times for a film most people never knew existed. And that includes a new Netflix version starring Frank Grillo and Anthony Mackie. It drops next month and the first trailer is here to prove it.

Movie Review: 'Triple 9'

Heists, dirty cops, shifting loyalties, betrayal, constant tension, the Russian mob, more bullets than you can possibly count, copious explosions, an incredible cast, and the guy who directed both The Road and The Proposition. Ask me what I want in a movie and I’ll likely read off most of the things I just listed, all of which figure prominently in director John Hillcoat’s new crime film, Triple 9. All of the pieces are in place, and though this is a solid, grim offering, one that I enjoyed well enough, Triple 9 never offers any surprises and watches like scraps of other crime movies stitched together in ways that don’t always fit. There are shades of Heat, Sicario, Training Day, and more, but the end result is a scattered, if exciting, dark, and passable thriller.

If traditional Christmas fare like Miracle on 34th Street and It’s a Wonderful Life are, well, a bit too traditional for your tastes—by that I mean there’s little to no hard drug use, few if any curse words, and absolutely no close up images of genitals—then 2015 is your lucky year. This holiday season we have director Jonathan Levine’s The Night Before, and it is crude, crass, sweeter than you may expect, and, most importantly, really goddamn funny.
