I want to like Eli Roth, I really do. Dude adores horror, and listening to him talk, his enthusiasm is infectious. I love that he champions the genre, but I can’t stand his movies. So when I heard he was remaking Death Wish with Bruce Willis, I cringed. Well, the first trailer is here, and it’s exactly what I expected.

A while back, the news hit that the duo behind Big Bad Wolves, Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado, were going to direct a remake of DeathWish starring Bruce Willis. Citing the ubiquitious “creative differences,” those two dropped out, but now it’s being reported that Eli Roth will direct Bruce Willis in a remake of Death Wish. That’s…intriguing.

I’m talking, of course, about cannibals in the jungle, which have, over the years, been some of the most brutal, controversial horror flicks ever committed to celluloid. Now imagine someone made a Scary Movie style spoof of films like Ruggero Deodato’s Cannibal Holocaust or Umberto Lenzi’s 1981 Cannibal Ferox, and that’s not far off from what you get with director Eli Roth’s latest endeavor, The Green Inferno.

Eli Roth and I have a troubled relationship. As much as I appreciate his infectious enthusiasm about horror—just listening to him talk it’s hard not to get excited—I’ve never been a fan of his movies. Cabin Fever didn’t do much for me, and the Hostel movies and their ilk have never been particularly interesting. That said, I’m stoked to see Green Inferno, his take on the cannibals-in-the-Amazon-jungle subgenre—that’s one that doesn’t get much love these days—even though we have no idea when we’ll actually see it. I am, however, very intrigued by his latest, the Keanu Reeves-starring Knock Knock, and now we have this new trailer that only serves to up that anticipation.
