This Trailer For Eli Roth's 'Knock Knock' Puts Keanu Reeves' Marriage, And More, In Jeopardy

Eli Roth and I have a troubled relationship. As much as I appreciate his infectious enthusiasm about horror—just listening to him talk it’s hard not to get excited—I’ve never been a fan of his movies. Cabin Fever didn’t do much for me, and the Hostel movies and their ilk have never been particularly interesting. That said, I’m stoked to see Green Inferno, his take on the cannibals-in-the-Amazon-jungle subgenre—that’s one that doesn’t get much love these days—even though we have no idea when we’ll actually see it. I am, however, very intrigued by his latest, the Keanu Reeves-starring Knock Knock, and now we have this new trailer that only serves to up that anticipation.

I’ll watch anything with Keanu Reeves, but it doesn’t hurt matters that, especially recently, he’s been making interesting choices in unusual genre films. His revenge-actioner John Wick was my favorite movie of 2014, and his directorial debut, Man of Tai Chi, while not breaking any new ground, is certainly a fun, solid martial arts flick. And Knock Knock looks like it could continue this run.

Here’s the synopsis:

Evan Webber (Keanu Reeves) is living the dream. Just look at his beautiful, successful wife, his two wonderful kids, and his truly stunning house—which he designed himself. Of course he did. Things are going so well, Evan doesn’t even mind spending Father’s Day alone while the rest of his family heads out for a beach weekend. And then there’s a knock on the door.
The two young women (Lorenza Izzo and Ana de Armas) standing on Evan’s doorstep are where Evan’s dream takes a nightmarish turn. Given co-writer/director Eli Roth’s well-deserved reputation for creating cinematic discomfort, it should come as no surprise what happens next: Things get weird, and then dark, and then much, much, much darker. But this is no splatter film, so Roth keeps the horror nice and psychological as Evan’s life—and house—get ripped apart, piece by beautiful piece.

Knock Knock premiered last night at Sundance as part of their late night program, so we’ll likely start hearing reports before long. There’s no word on a wider release, but that, too, should be coming down the pipe.
