Ridley Scott's 'The Martian' Trailer Pits Matt Damon Against Space

Ridley Scott’s last few movies have been less than stellar. Exodus: Gods and Kings is just bad, and while I’m one of Prometheus’ defenders, it’s a film with tons of major problems. That said, he’s still a damn cinematic treasure, and I was pumped for his latest, The Martian, even before this awesome new trailer dropped.

Based on Andy Weir’s best selling novel, and adapted by Cabin in the Woods director Drew Goddard, The Martian tells the story of Mark Watney (Matt Damon). He just became one of the first people to walk on Mars, and he’s about to become the first person to die there. When a storm strikes his team, they beat a hasty retreat from the Red Planet, only they think Watney is dead and leave him behind. With no way to contact NASA or his crew, he must figure out how to survive with 31 days worth of supplies. As he says, if he’s going to make it, he’s “Going to have to science the shit out of this”

This takes the harrowing solo survival tale and just cranks it up to eleven, with even more insurmountable odds and deadly hazards than usual, and if the finished film is half as tense at this trailer, we’re in for a wild ride. This isn’t just man versus nature, this is man versus space nature.

In addition to Damon, The Martian also stars Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kate Mara, Jeff Daniels, Kristen Wiig, Sean Bean, Donald Glover, and more, and opens November 25.

This trailer follows just a day after our first real look at The Martian in this viral video that provides more context for the film and gives you more of Matt Damon’s character.

And there’s also this new poster.
