Final 'X-Men: Apocalypse' Trailer Is Full Of Adventure And Surprises

While both Marvel and DC appear to have a roadmap for their respective superhero franchises—though they are certainly subject to change—20th Century Fox’s X-Men series has the feeling that they studio is just throwing things at the wall, seeing what sticks, and making it up as they go. They basically retconned the entire original timeline out of existence. It’s going to be interesting to see where they go with the latest installment, X-Men: Apocalypse. But as we approach the release date, we’ve got the final trailer, which arrives with some unexpected bits of fan service that are sure to make hardcore followers cheer in their seats. Watch it after the jump.

Of course I’m going to watch the hell out of X-Men: Apocalypse, and probably enjoy it—I am, after all, quite fond of both X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past. This looks like a blast, with lots of big action pieces, fan favorite mutants, and the most dangerous villain the X-Men have ever faces on screen—when the big bad has the previous big bad of the saga as an underling, you know shit is serious.

But this trailer also makes it look like X-Men: Apocalypse will have the same issues the rest of the franchise has had. For example, one of the big knocks has always been that they don’t work as a team, that each one goes off and does their own thing when it should be obvious that working together is the best option.

There are some bombshells in this trailer that I wish they’d saved for the actual movie. Like the fact that Magneto is Quicksilver’s daddy. It’s a fun moment, to be sure, but it could have waited.

Then there’s the big one at the end, where we learn definitively that Hugh Jackman and Wolverine will be back for Apocalypse before his last ride in the upcoming Wolverine 3. It actually bums me out that they included this. From what we’ve heard, Wolverine’s probably not a giant presence in this movie. I get that he’s hugely popular and the studio is trying to drum up interest any way they can, but how cool would it have been to see that shot for the first time in the theaters, to see that hand and those claws pop out? That could have been one of those moments where the entire theater cheers in unison, and though I’m sure that will happen to a degree, the impact won’t be quite the same.

X-Men: Apocalypse opens on May 27.
