Kimo Stamboel's 'DreadOut' Trailer Shows Why Teens Shouldn't Investigate Cult Murders

The various parts of the Mo Brothers (Headshot) team have been busy as of late. Timo Tjahjanto pummeled us with brutal actioner The Night Comes for Us and horror joint May the Devil Take You, and though he produced Night, the other half of the team, Kimo Stamboel, has his own solo directorial horror film coming, DreadOut. Check out the creepy new trailer below.

Screen Anarchy debuted this latest look at DreadOut, an adaptation of a popular Indonesian horror video game. Sure, video game movies have a rocky history, at best, but what we see here looks like it has the goods. And to be fair, the concept of the game sounds more like a horror movie than your typical offering.

What we have here is a bunch of teens who venture into an abandoned building, the site of a cult murder that just may be a portal to hell, or at least a rather hellish place. There are maybe-zombies, spooky old people, supernatural forces of some sort, apparently a cult, and a bunch of other nasty genre goodies for fans to gawk at. Yeah, there’s a lot going on, and I’m here for it.

The game revolves around a collection of Indonesian myths and folk tales, and if you die, you wake up in Limbo, which you then have to escape. Who knows if all of that translates to the movie, but it definitely gives DreadOut a cool hook and interesting potential avenues for Stamboel and company to explore.

DreadOut sars Caitlin Halderman, Marsha Aruan, and Jeffri Nichol. Produced by Korean juggernaut CJ Entertainment, it opens on January 3, 2019. Hopefully it’s a wide enough release that we will get to see it stateside and elsewhere, because this looks like it’s right in my wheelhouse.
