'After Midnight' Trailer: 'The Battery' Team Returns With A "Romantic Creature Feature"

In 2012, writer-director-star Jeremy Gardner dropped a small zombie movie, The Battery, breathing a bit of life into the undead subgenre. Though it’s been a few years, he returns to horror with the “romantic creature feature” After Midnight. If you wonder what the hell that might look like, check out the new trailer below.

Looking at this After Midnight trailer, along with the poster, the tagline “Love Will Rip Your Heart Out” definitely feels accurate—does anyone else suspect werewolf involvement? However it shakes out, I’m here for horror as a metaphor for a broken heart.

This also has a similar vibe to The Battery. Which makes a great deal of sense as Gardner reunites with director of photography Christian Stella, who also co-directs. It definitely has a similar lo-fi, no-frills aesthetic and looks like it utilizes a lot of the same contained staging and tweaks to a well-worn subgenre.

Here’s a synopsis:
Ten years into his small-town, storybook romance with Abby, Hank suddenly wakes up to an empty home. With nothing but a cryptic note to explain why she left, Hank’s charmed life begins to fall apart. To make matters worse, Abby’s disappearance seems to trigger the arrival of a ferocious creature that crawls out of the old grove on the edge of his property.
Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson (The Endless) produced After Midnight, which co-stars Brea Grant (Beyond the Gates) and Benson, among others. The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, where Cranked Up Films picked up the distribution rights.

Appropriately enough After Midnight drops in theaters and on VOD on February 14, 2020.
