'Ghostbusters: Afterlife' Trailer Takes The Nostalgia Wagon Out For A Spin

After the last Ghostbusters movie no one asked for (which I enjoy well enough—it has the same problems almost every Paul Feig movie has), the internet threw such a hissy fit that girls got to wear the iconic jumpsuits and wield proton packs that it was only a matter of time until we got another one. And there’s now a trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Watch it if you want.

Dan Aykroyd has been talking about Ghostbusters 3 basically since Ghostbusters 2 in 1989. Bill Murray was a longtime vocal holdout, and after the death of Harold Ramis, it seemed unlikely. But never say never when it comes to Hollywood squeezing every last cent out of an IP, so here we are. And this Ghostbusters: Afterlife…looks insufferable.

Of course, this is a trailer. And, of course, I’m still going to watch anything they slap the Ghostbusters name on. I’m even someone who loves Paul Rudd, but damn, this first look is absolutely painful and lifeless and Jesus Christ I hope it’s better than this first glimpse. It can’t be much worse.

Here’s a synopsis:
In Ghostbusters: Afterlife, when a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind.
Supposedly most of the surviving original cast will return, including Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, who gets a voiceover line here, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and even Sigourney Weaver. (Don’t hold your breath for Rick Moranis, though that would be the coup of the year.) New additions include Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Bokeem Woodbine, and Mckenna Grace. Jason “Son of Ivan” Reitman (Juno) takes up the helm from his father. There’s a lot to like with this creative team, so let’s all cross our fingers that this is just a bad trailer and the finished product turns out better. As usual, we'll have to wait and see.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife opens July 10, 2020.
