The 2022 Seattle Film Critics Society Award Nominations

seattle film critics society logo
Movies are pretty cool. A bold statement, I know. One of the perks (responsibilities that require additional work) of this job is that at the end of the year I get to shout out my favorite films by voting in a number of film critic groups. One that’s near and dear to my heart is the Seattle Film Critics Society in my hometown, and, wouldn’t you know it, we just announced our nominations.

We’re a little smaller than some other groups, which means a relatively modest segment can have a big sway when it comes to voting. Sometimes this leads to a wild nomination or two, though this year things played out more or less as expected. If I’m being honest, however, I like this slate of nominees way, way more than last year. Unlike a lot of cycles, many of my choices actually found a home.

We have a couple of different categories than other organizations to give our awards their own distinct flavor. Our action category is always interesting and fun, especially since everyone has their own interpretation of what it means. There’s also a youth performance category, a villain-of-the-year vote, and one award dedicated specifically to celebrating films with ties to the Pacific Northwest.

As usual, make of these what you will. I love some of the nominees and am less high on others. There aren’t any I actively dislike, as has happened, and none stick out as completely off the wall. Overall, this feels like a solid group of deserving nominees. (Fun fact, while I saw almost all of these movies, I reviewed almost none of them.)

We hand out the awards on Tuesday, January 17. Follow along live on our Twitter page.
