COVID-19 has laid waste to the movie industry. Hell, it basically cancelled movies big and small for the foreseeable future, both theatrical releases as well as production. Film festivals have also felt impact. SXSW was straight-up cancelled, Cannes was pushed and seems likely to pull the plug entirely, and the North Bend Film Festival moved from August to October, among others. In our own backyard, one of our annual favorite events, the BoneBat Comedy of Horrors Film Festival, was also bumped back until this all blows over. In the meantime, however, they’ve got something for you, no matter where you live.

The BoneBat Comedy Of Horrors Film Festival Is Almost Here
We’re not even four full months in and this has already been
the rainiest year in, I don’t know, ever. Holy crap it’s wet and dark and dank
and miserable outside. You know how to combat that? By spending an entire Saturday
sitting inside and watching horror movies and drinking beer, that’s how. In
Seattle, this means it’s once again time for the BoneBat “Comedy of Horrors” Film Festival, which runs April 8 from 1pm to 12am at SIFF Cinema Uptown.

SIFF 2016: 'WTF?!' Shorts
Short films are a notoriously tricky form. For every
fantastic offering, you have to wade through a sea of less-than-stellar dreck.
Over the Memorial Day weekend, the Seattle International Film Festival runs
their annual shorts program, and while the WTF segment has
its share of problems, it was, by and large, a strong collection. And every title
on the docket certainly lives up to the moniker.

SIFF Shorts: 'Nightmare Mystery Theatre'
Every year, in addition to more than 400 features, the
Seattle International Film Festival also presents an extensive series of short.
While fests like this may be your only chance to see many of the full-length
films, the odds are even worse that you’re going to stumble across most of
these smaller offerings. There aren’t a lot of mainstream distribution avenues
for short films, they don’t get released into theaters, so if you miss them
now, you’re probably shit out of luck. Digging into the darker side of things,
the films in the “Nightmare Mystery Theatre” program offer you quick glimpses
into the twisted, violent, and horrific.

MIFFF Review: The Short Films
One of the coolest things about the Maelstrom International Fantastic Movie Festival is the shorts program. There were an absurd number of them, almost fifty, broken up into genre-specific chunks—a fantasy, animation, horror, and science fiction block. These are films that you’re not likely to see many other places. In a general sense shorts are wildly hit and miss—there are some great ones, but to get to them you have to sift through a crap load of garbage.
