This probably isn’t surprising to anyone, but I’ve kept a
close eye on the Scott Adkins/Marko Zaror-starring action joint Savage Dog since the first rumblings. Come on, it stars Scott Adkins and
Marko Zaror. That alone is enough to make me watch anything. I’d watch them
sitting around drinking coffee and chatting about the weather. Fortunately,
there’s way more to Savage Dog than that, as confirmed by
this new trailer.
There’s jungle training, pit fighting, Keith David narrating—if
I didn’t know better, I’d say this Savage Dog trailer was a hidden
remnant left over from the mid-1980s and would go into a deep dive spiral of
obsession until I tracked down a worn, wearied, bootleg VHS copy. Savage
Dog comes out this year, so I don’t have to do that, which is
awesome. God damn, that music is so over-the-top epic, it’s perfect.
Most importantly, Savage Dog has Scott Adkins (Ninja 2: Shadow of a Tear) pummeling dudes; Marko
Zaror (Redeemer) in a dope 1950s suit and hat combo with a
machine gun, also pummeling dudes; and Keith David hanging out, being a badass,
as Keith David is wont to do. It doesn’t hurt that former MMA fighter Cung Le
(The Man with the Iron Fists) is along for the ride, as is
rising martial arts star Juju Chan (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon:
Sword of Destiny, not to mention a Muay Thai champ and Tae Kwon Do
black belt).
A couple of brief plot stingers have floated around that
basically confirm what we see in this trailer. The first is: “The French
have left, the Americans have yet to arrive. But one man has declared war.” The
second: “A story set in Indochina in 1959, a land beyond rule and a time
without mercy, and the birth of a legend.”
This gives us the time, place, and a rough-and-tumble,
lawless environment, which is perfect for a movie like Savage
Dog. And any time one man wants to declare war, that’s generally just
dandy from where I sit. Indochina—the region home to countries like Vietnam,
Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar—in 1959 was a tense, hectic place,
especially as things hurtled towards what became the Vietnam War. In short, it’s
an ideal setting for this type of gritty, down-and-dirty action fare.
Directed by Jesse V. Johnson (Pit
Fighter, Green Street Hooligans 2, and tons of
stunt work), Savage Dog marks the first collaboration
between Scott Adkins and Marko Zaror since Undisputed 3 (can’t
wait for Undisputed 4, or Boyka: Undisputed,
which also drops this year). And if that’s not enough to get hardcore action
heads excited, this probably isn’t your jam and you’ve likely stopped reading already.
There’s no word on when we’ll see Savage
Dog, but given the general realm where this movie dwells, my guess is
it’ll hit the DTV circuit sometime this year. Hopefully sooner than later.
