'The Witch: Subversion' Trailer: This Brutal South Korean Action Movie Hits Home Video Soon

Now that the Oscars are in the rearview (yay, Parasite), we can return our attention to our regularly scheduled programming: ultra-violent international genre cinema. To that end, here is the trailer for South Korean director Park Hoon-jung’s The Witch: Subversion. (Or The Witch: Part 1—The Subversion if you prefer.)

Are you in? Yeah, we’re in, too. Come on, this The Witch: Subversion trailer looks violent and fast-paced, full of action, fighting, and maybe a touch of science fiction for good measure. What more do you want?

Park knows his way around nasty corners of Korean cinema. He wrote Kim Jee-woon’s I Saw the Devil, which is one of the best movies of the 2010s, and wrote and directed sprawling crime drama New World. Just to throw this out there, we should probably be paying more attention to him and his body of work.

Here’s the synopsis for The Witch: Subversion:
10 years ago, Ja-yoon escaped from a secret government facility in the midst of an inexplicable incident. An old couple finds her alone near death in the woods and takes her in even though she has no memory of who she is or how she got there. She grows up to be a bright high school student and enters a nationally televised audition program to win the top prize and help her struggling family. But as soon as she appears on TV, strange people start appearing in her life and Ja-yoon falls into turmoil as her seemingly ordinary life turns upside down in a blink of an eye… Featuring an award-winning performance by Kim Da-mi and co-starring Choi Woo-shik (PARASITE, TRAIN TO BUSAN).
Does anyone else get a bit of a Dark Angel vibe from this description? That’s a very good thing from a certain perspective.

The Witch: Subversion has a banger cast is the first in a planned trilogy. From what we see here, that sounds like a fantastic idea to us. Well Go USA releases the film on home video on March 10.
