'Possessor: Uncut' (2020) Movie Review

The name Cronenberg conjures up images of creeping body horror, twisted psychological pressure, and real nightmare shit. And apparently it’s a familial trait. David Cronenberg delivered classics like Scanners, The Fly, Eastern Promises, and many more, and his son, Brandon Cronenberg, has fully picked up his mantle. And the body horror apple doesn’t fall far from the body horror tree, illustrated to perfection by his sophomore feature, Possessor: Uncut.

With the name Cronenberg, you have our immediate attention. You’re probably thinking David Cronenberg, director of Scanners, The Fly, Eastern Promises, and a ton of other masterpieces. This time, however, we’re talking about his son, Brandon Cronenberg, who has become a filmmaker of some renown in his own right. And from the look of this red band trailer for his sophomore feature, Possessor, the body horror apple doesn’t fall far from the body horror tree. Check it out. 

'Annihilation' (2018) Movie Review

Talking to fans of Jeff VanderMeer’s Annihilation, if you venture to see Alex Garland’s cinematic adaptation, steel yourself, they are very different animals. Both maintain the general sci-fi Heart of Darkness-style journey, and there are a few plot points intact—like the lighthouse and Area X. But aside from that, they go in two different directions.

I Have Questions About 'Annihilation'

I try as best I can, and for the most part I’m successful, to keep books and their cinematic adaptations in separate compartments. They’re drastically different mediums. You can do things in a book that you can’t in a movie; novels have space to spool out and expand, while movies have a more rigid time structure. No movie is ever going to ruin a book, no matter how much it changes. And though I don’t expect that to happen in this instance, I have questions about Alex Garland’s adaptation of Jeff VanerMeer’s Annihilation.

'Annihilation' Trailer: Alex Garland's Sci-Fi Film Looks Beautiful And Creepy

After directing Ex Machina (and writing Dredd and 28 Days Later…), I’m down to watch anything Alex Garland does. So, understandably, I’m rather jacked for his upcoming adaptation of Jeff VanderMeer’s best-selling novel, Annihilation. I haven’t read the book, but I love that Garland’s sticking around the sci-fi end of the pool, and the first teaser trailer looks very much like a movie I want to watch.

'Good Time' (2017) Movie Review

Coming from a studio these days, a film like the Safdie Brothers’ Good Time would likely turn into an action-packed caper. But in the Safdie’s hands—and fronted by a performance from Robert Pattinson that should be in the awards conversation come the end of the year, but probably won’t—it’s a gritty, off-kilter, singularly propulsive crime drama that synthesizes John Carpenter and the French New Wave and showcases New York as a dingy, grimy, overall fucked up and nasty place.
