'Nosferatu' (2024) Movie Review

There’s a great deal to admire in the latest rendition of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 horror classic (and unofficial Dracula adaptation) Nosferatu, the long-simmering passion project from Robert Eggers. It’s exquisitely mounted down to the most granular detail, features several fantastic, committed performances, and is stunning to look at. But for all there is to appreciate, it fails to move the needle or elicit much of any reaction beyond a shrug.

'The Northman' (2022) Movie Review

I may not be as entirely in love with The Northman as many, though I do think it’s quite good. I am, however, definitely in love with the fact that after The Witch and The Lighthouse, which has budgets of approximately $5 and $11 million respectively, someone gave Robert Eggers a shit-ton of money (reportedly in the neighborhood of $90 million) to direct a bonkers-ass, borderline-hallucinatory Viking epic. And damn does he ever go for broke. It’s strange and esoteric and features both a White-Walker-looking Valkyrie with braces and Bjork playing a creepy no-eyed witch to provide a bit of context.

Around these parts, we’re big fans of Robert Eggers. When you go back to back with The Witch and The Lighthouse right out of the gate, we’re going to pay attention. And damn, the first trailer for his upcoming Viking vengeance tale, The Northman, does not disappoint. Check it out below.

'The Lighthouse' (2019) Movie Review

Where to begin with The Lighthouse? If you go in expecting the creeping Satanic dread of writer/director Robert Eggers last film, The Witch, you’ll be let down. That’s not to say there’s no creeping dread, because there’s plenty, it’s simply of a different sort. The film edges up to the supernatural, but is more concerned with what lurks inside, deep down, waiting to emerge. It’s also, as my notes taken during the screening attest, “weird as balls.” Somehow it works. I’m not always entirely certain how, but it does.

Over the weekend, The Lighthouse, the latest from The Witch director Robert Eggers, played at the Toronto International Film Festival. I try to avoid early reactions for movies I’m excited about, like this one, and I don’t put much stock in the reactions I do see come out of film festivals. But this one appears to have broken some brains, and I count that as a win. To mark the occasion, A24 released a new trailer, and I’m still not sure what we’re about to witness.

Robert Egger’s debut feature, The Witch, may be a horror movie, but it’s more of a folk or fairy tale, a suspense thriller dressed up in supernatural trappings. Steeped in the religious conviction and paranoia of 17th Century New England pilgrim life, this is more dirt-smudged tension and distrustful atmosphere than jump scares and monsters hiding around corners.
