This Is The Best 'Kong: Skull Island' Trailer Yet

So, the Oscars happened last night and for once my favorite movie of the year (Moonlight) won, despite the kerfuffle at the end. I don’t think that’s ever happened. My preferred movies tend to have more explosions than Academy voters seem to appreciate. But I’m getting off topic, I don’t care about the Oscars. None of that matters because this morning we have a brand new Kong: Skull Island trailer and good lord I can’t wait for this movie.

Star Tom Hiddleston shared this on Twitter, and it’s easily the best Kong: Skull Island trailer yet. It doubles down on that whole Apocalypse-Now-with-a-great-ape vibe, but it’s also funny and chaotic and thrilling. Who knows if the movie is going to be any good, but what we’ve seen thus far is action packed, harrowing, and looks like a complete blast.

The musical choice (The Animals’ “We Gotta Get out of This Place”) in this trailer is fantastic, the editing is great, and director Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kings of Summer) is certainly of fan.

I don’t know that I would have jumped right to that place, but now that he mentions The Handmaiden, there’s an obvious shared DNA between the discordant, pulsing trailers for Park Chan-wook’s erotic historical thriller and this latest look at Kong: Skull Island. That may well be the only things those two films have in common, but what the hell.

Here’s a plot synopsis for Kong: Skull Island, though if you’re like me, watching a giant ape throw down with crazy-ass monsters is more than enough to put your butt in a seat:

The year is 1973. Somewhere in our world, it is said that there exists a wondrous island unspoiled by man – a land shrouded in mystery, where myth runs wild. Uncharted and undiscovered. When the secretive organization known as Monarch identify this destination as the origin point for mysterious new superspecies, they mount an expedition to discover its secrets. What they find on Skull Island is an adventure beyond any human experience. An exotic paradise of wonders and terrors, where flora and fauna have fused together into an Eden of otherworldly jungle creatures.
As one group fights to escape and the other declares war on Kong, we discover that the mighty primate is at the center of a battle for dominion over the island, locked into a ‘survival of the fittest’ face-off with the terrifying apex predators responsible for wiping out his kin. Driven by vengeance, Kong will become nature’s fury, and fight to take his rightful place upon the throne of most powerful beast on the island, revealing the story of how Kong became King.

Kong: Skull Island stars Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, Toby Kebbell, John C. Riley, Corey Hawkins, Tian Jing, Jason Mitchell, Shea Whigham, and, you know, King Kong, and opens March 10.
