'Kong: Skull Island' (2017) Movie Review

Back in 2013, director Jordon Vogt-Roberts made one of my favorite movies of that year, The Kings of Summer, a quiet, tender indie coming-of-age picture. It’s bittersweet, built on relatable characters, and subtly portrays the moment where youthful innocence collides with the hard reality of growing up. And because every young white male director who makes a moderately successful independent picture automatically gets his own blockbuster franchise, he was handed the reins to Kong: Skull Island. And he made the exact opposite of that movie.

This Is The Best 'Kong: Skull Island' Trailer Yet

So, the Oscars happened last night and for once my favorite movie of the year (Moonlight) won, despite the kerfuffle at the end. I don’t think that’s ever happened. My preferred movies tend to have more explosions than Academy voters seem to appreciate. But I’m getting off topic, I don’t care about the Oscars. None of that matters because this morning we have a brand new Kong: Skull Island trailer and good lord I can’t wait for this movie.

One of the biggest knocks on Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla reboot was that the titular King of the Monsters only actually appeared on screen for like ten minutes or whatever. Judging by this new trailer, that’s not going to be an issue for Kong: Skull Island. Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kings of Summer) and company certainly don’t skimp on the monkey.

'High-Rise' (2015) Movie Review: Mania, Narcissism, And Power Failure

Cards on the table: I adore J.G. Ballard’s 1975 novel High-Rise. Normally it takes quite a bit to get me excited about an adaptation, especially of a book I love, but the moment I heard Ben Wheatley, the man behind such gonzo, genre defying fare as Kill List, Sightseers, and A Field in England, was on the case, it all just made so much damn sense. I would have kept a close eye on either a new Ben Wheatley film or an adaptation of High-Rise, but the fact that I could do both at the same time was just gravy.

From the early responses at fall film festivals like Toronto and Fantastic Fest last year, it’s abundantly clear that Ben Wheatley’s High-Rise isn’t going to be for everyone, but it certainly appears to be for me. Ballard’s dystopian classic High-Rise got mixed reviews after it debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, but this is still near the top of my most anticipated movies of 2016. Any time you attach the name Ben Wheatley to a movie, you have our undivided attention. The maniac behind genre twisters like Sightseers, A Field in England, and Kill List is back, which on its own is an exciting prospect, but the fact that he adapted our favorite J.G. Ballard novel, High-Rise, well that’s just peachy keen in our book. We can’t think of anyone better to bring this book to life, and star Tom Hiddleston just dropped a new trailer for us to enjoy.

'Crimson Peak' Movie Review
