'Cruella' (2021) Movie Review
The first hour of Cruella, Disney’s latest attempt to retcon an iconic villain from one of their classic animated films into a sympathetic character, is actually pretty fun. Full of over-the-top costumes, elaborately staged heists, and adorable puppers, it’s a campy Goodfellas by way of The Favourite. (Favourite scribe Tony McNamara worked on the script, so that makes a great deal of sense.) It’s energetic, visually arresting, and, despite being completely unnecessary and awkwardly forced, does a marginal enough job of humanizing Cruella de Vil, the two-toned, dog-hating antagonist from 101 Dalmatians.

'The Favourite' (2018) Movie Review
With movies like Dogtooth, The Lobster, and The Killing of a Sacred Deer on his CV, Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos crafts singular, alluring, if often cold and standoffish films. With his latest, The Favourite, he delivers his most accessible, warmest offering to date. Not without its own oddities, peculiarities, and the filmmaker’s trademark strangeness, it’s anchored by next-level performances; lush, intricate costume and production design; and will serve as an entry point for many into his cannon.

Yorgos Lanthimos' 'The Favourite' Trailer Has Bullets, Blood, And Bodices
For his follow up to The Lobster and
The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Yorgos Lanthimos is taking on an
18th century British period piece. And as you can imagine, being a Yorgos
Lanthimos film and all, The Favourite isn’t exactly what you
expect from this set up. I don’t entirely know what I’m watching with this new
trailer, but I love it and can’t wait to see more.

'La La Land' (2016) Movie Review
After Whiplash whipped up a frenzy,
writer/director Damien Chazelle could do damn near anything he wanted. Helm a
superhero movie? Probably could have done that. Tackle a big-budget summer
blockbuster or weighty Oscar-bait drama? So many others have followed that
path. But what does he do? He makes La La Land, a full-on
throwback musical. And he absolutely kills it.

'La La Land' Belts Out A Dreamy New Trailer
I’m a sucker for musicals, and I love, love, love the fact
that, after the massive critical success of Whiplash, when
he could have done damn near anything he wanted, Damien Chazelle made a goddamn
musical. And a musical starring the tag team of charm Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling to boot. La La Land hits theaters in December, and
though it’s a few months off in the distance, it just delivered a dreamy new
trailer.

'Gangster Squad' Movie Review
“Gangster
Squad” is a film a lot of people may take the wrong way. Most of us thought we
were in store for a gritty, violent gangster pic, and while there is plenty of
brutality—one of the first things you see is a pair of cars rip a guy in half,
and coyotes feasting on his innards—that’s not exactly what you get. What
director Ruben Fleisher (“Zombieland”) delivers is more of a period melodrama
that just happens to tell a gangster story. Full of action, it’s also a damn
lot of cartoonish fun for a while, like a blood soaked “Dick Tracy”. “Gangster
Squad” plays out like a light movie serial, but at the end of the day, however,
you want there to be something more.

'The Amazing Spider-Man' Movie Review
Here’s the deal with Marc Webb’s “The Amazing Spider-Man”:
it’s good; it’s fine. There is, however, a but. We’ll get to that. There’s
web-slinging adventure, a good amount of fun, and some wonderful actors giving
solid performances. Andrew Garfield has the wise cracking, awkward loner thing
down pat, and pulls off a near perfect Peter Parker. Emma Stone’s take on Gwen
Stacey is charming, adorable, and in a couple moments, heartbreaking. This
isn’t a perfect movie, by far, but overall “The Amazing Spider-Man” ends up a
decent summertime popcorn movie. But, is fine good enough for Marvel? Will
decent cut it? Given the hot streak they’ve been on, especially with the
massive success of “The Avengers”, this will never be more than a slight
disappointment.
