Fantasia 2026: 'Matapanki' Movie Review

We’ve all had too much to drink and thought we had super powers, right? What Chilean writer/director Diego “Mapache” Fuentes supposes is: what if those powers were real? The resulting film is Matapanki, a frenetic blast of gritty punk vibes and chaos overflowing with hardscrabble energy and breakneck pace. This is not for everyone, or even most people, but hot damn is this ever a movie for me.

'Dinner In America' (2020) Movie Review

 

“Fuck the rest of them, fuck ‘em all but us.” So goes the refrain in a song written by Simon (Kyle Gallner, Veronica Mars) and Patty (Emily Skeggs, The Miseducation of Cameron Post). It also forms the general conceit and overall attitude of Adam Rehmeier’s middle-finger-flying, punk-rock-fuck-you of a love story, Dinner in America. Think Repo Man by way of Bonnie and Clyde and that begins to paint the picture.

'Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliché' (2021) Movie Review

On its own, a documentary about Poly Styrene, legendary vocalist of X-Ray Spex, would be a good watch. A punk pioneer and one of the few women, and even fewer women of color, in the early days of punk, her story is one of grappling with fame and influence, carving out your own place in the world, racism, misogyny, mental illness, and much more. While the new documentary, Poly Styrene: I Am a Cliché, has all of that, it also presents the story different, more personal light than most music docs.
