'Ready Player One' (2018) Movie Review



Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One represents the ultimate fanboy wish-fulfillment dream. It’s a world here all of that obscure accumulated knowledge they’ve (we) spent years collecting, collating, and committing to memory actually means something, is actually important, and saves the world and gets the girl. While it’s remarkably constructed, and contains moments of true awe and Spielberg-ian wonder, the film alternates between reasonable entertainment and obnoxious tedium.

'The Post' (2017) Movie Review



Steven Spielberg’s The Post doesn’t surprise anyone. One, it tells a famous, well-known story; two, it’s obvious from moment one where it’s heading; and three, it’s not trying to pull a Houdini and execute any startling narrative gymnastics. It also won’t surprise anyone that The Post is excellent, occasionally thrilling, and watching Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, and Spielberg together is like watching a goddamn symphony.

Phenomenally beautiful to look at in that effortless, stunning way Steven Spielberg does so much better than everyone else and that appears so easy and natural, The BFG is as dull as a pile of sopping wet cardboard.

'Bridge Of Spies' Movie Review


Steven Spielberg directing Tom Hanks in a Cold War-era espionage thriller with a script by Joel and Ethan Coen; what about that description is not worth getting excited about? That’s all most people really need to hear about Bridge of Spies to decide whether or not it’s a movie they want to see, and while it isn’t a bad film by any stretch of the imagination, those stellar pieces never come together like they need to, or like they could have.
