'Bill & Ted Face The Music' Trailer Reminds Us To Be Excellent To Each Other

As bleak as 2020 has been, we could all use a touch of hope, optimism, and to be a bit more excellent to each other. Which is part of why we’re so excited for Bill & Ted Face the Music, the long-in-development third chapter in the Bill & Ted saga. (Also, because the first two rank among our favorite films of all time.) Face the Music is still slated to open this summer—we’ll see how that goes—and now we have our first trailer. Check it out, dudes.

This trailer for Bill & Ted Face the Music gives us the basic building blocks of the movie. After rocking the world at the Battle of the Bands, Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves), have, how do we put this delicately, not been productive. The future keeps waiting for Wyld Stallyns to write the song that unites the world and, well, they haven’t quite got there. So the slacker duo comes up with a plan, to go to the future, when they’ve already written the song, and steal it from themselves. As one might imagine, things don’t go quite as smooth as planned.

Face the Music looks fun and goofy and infused with the inherent goodness of the originals. (Hopefully minus a few gags that have, ahem, not aged well.) There are also a few new wrinkles. For example, Bill and Ted are dads now. Bill has a daughter named Thea (Samara Weaving) and Ted has a daughter named Billie (Brigette Lundy-Paine).

We’ll also see a few familiar faces, most notably William Sadler’s Death, and Amy Stoch reprises her role as Missy, I mean, Mom. The princesses, Joanna and Elizabeth also return, though they’ve been recast, now played by Jayma Mays and Erinn Hayes, respectively. The cast also features new additions Anthony Carrigan, Kristen Schaal, Holland Taylor, Beck Bennett (as grown-up Deacon), and Jillian Bell, among others.

Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon, who were behind the original movies, wrote the script, and Dean Parisot (Galaxy Quest) handles the directing duties.

A third Bill & Ted movie is one of those projects that those involved have talked about sporadically since 1991. It picked up momentum a couple of times but never got too far, so we didn’t expect it to actually materialize. But here we are. And with the world the way it is right now, this seems like the best possible time for another adventure through history.

Prepare yourselves for more strange things afoot at the Circle K when Bill & Ted Face the Music lands in theaters (fingers crossed) August 21, 2020.
