'Godzilla Vs. Kong' (2021) Movie Review

godzilla vs kong
With a movie with a title like Godzilla vs. Kong I only require a few simple things: Godzilla, King Kong, and Godzilla fighting King Kong. That’s is. Anything else is just window dressing. Director Adam Wingard (The GuestYou’re Next) knows this well and delivers plenty of monkey-punching-lizard action. And that rules. That’s all anyone really needs or wants to know.

'Godzilla Vs. Kong' Trailer: Yes, Godzilla Fights King Kong

godzilla fights king kong on a battle ship
I’m a simple man with simple tastes. Give me a giant ape fighting a skyscraper-tall lizard and I’m good. I don’t really care why they’re fighting, or where, or what they step on in the process. That’s all beside the point. And this is precisely what the first trailer for Godzilla vs. Kong delivers. Check it out for yourselves.

Netflix Passes A Creepy First Trailer For Adam Wingard's 'Death Note'

Cards on the table, I know nothing about Death Note. It’s apparently a super popular manga, which isn’t really my scene and explains why I know nothing about it. I do, however, know a thing or two about Adam Wingard, and those things are more than enough to get me excited for anything he’s involved with. (Even though Blair Witch was a total waste of time, The Guest and You’re Next suffice to bolster my enthusiasm.) Wingard’s Death Note adaptation hits Netflix later this year, and the streaming giant just dropped a first trailer.

'Blair Witch' (2016) Movie Review

Without breaking any new ground, You’re Next brought a freshness and crackling energy to the well-worn realm of home invasion horror. The Guest similarly infused the mysterious-stranger-comes-to-town narrative with a verve and life it hasn’t had in years (it also made my Top 25 Movies of the 21st Century So Far list). So to see a movie as uninspired and derivative, as pointless and unnecessary as Blair Witch from a filmmaking team as exciting as Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett, is disappointing to say the least.

Adam Wingard's 'The Woods' Trailer Is Watching You

Why do we go into the wilderness? Seriously. We’ve all seen enough horror movies by this point to know that nothing good ever happens when we leave the comfort and relative ease of our city homes. There are monsters, witches, cannibals, angry bears, and ghosts and ghouls of all stripes. Even in non-horror movies, there’s a lot to contend with. You may get sexually assaulted by hill folk, suffer a horrific accident on a hike, or have to cut off your own arm. I don’t even know why I go outside anymore. And after watching the trailer for Adam Wingard’s latest, The Woods, I’m even less likely to do so than before.
