'Kraken' (2026) Movie Review

tentacles threaten to grab a kayaker
A remote Norwegian fjord. A legacy of strange occurrences. Disappearing tourists. Environmental degradation. A corrupt business using questionable technology with unexpected side effects. All of this adds up to a big old mess in director Pal Oie’s new creature feature, Kraken, with mixed results. On one hand, it can be a thrilling adventure about human meddling waking up an unforeseen natural threat from the chilly depths of the ocean. On the other, it’s awash in cliches and a slow burn to the point where the fuse almost goes entirely out.

'Godzilla Vs. Kong' (2021) Movie Review

godzilla vs kong
With a movie with a title like Godzilla vs. Kong I only require a few simple things: Godzilla, King Kong, and Godzilla fighting King Kong. That’s is. Anything else is just window dressing. Director Adam Wingard (The GuestYou’re Next) knows this well and delivers plenty of monkey-punching-lizard action. And that rules. That’s all anyone really needs or wants to know.

'Godzilla Vs. Kong' Trailer: Yes, Godzilla Fights King Kong

godzilla fights king kong on a battle ship
I’m a simple man with simple tastes. Give me a giant ape fighting a skyscraper-tall lizard and I’m good. I don’t really care why they’re fighting, or where, or what they step on in the process. That’s all beside the point. And this is precisely what the first trailer for Godzilla vs. Kong delivers. Check it out for yourselves.

This 'Godzilla: King Of The Monsters' Trailer Is Mostly Monsters

The biggest problem with Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla reboot is that it eschews the titular monster in favor or lackluster (read: whack-as-hell) human characters. Sorry, no one wants to see Aaron Taylor-Johnson wooden act his way through scene after scene when we could be hanging out with the King of the Monsters. Before he tussles with King Kong, Godzilla gets another solo joint courtesy of Krampus director Michael Dougherty. Judging from this new Godzilla: King of the Monsters trailer, this movie rectifies the woeful lack of monsters in a big way.

'Rampage' (2018) Movie Review

Rampage, the latest opus of urban destruction from director Brad Peyton (San Andreas) and mega-star Dwayne Johnson, may legitimately be the stupidest movie I’ve ever seen. And I watched Air Bud last weekend for some reason. It’s also 100% the movie it looks like, with zero deviation. That’s not to say it’s without a certain level of fun, thanks almost entirely to The Rock, who does what The Rock does best. Only this time there are giant monsters, too. It’s somehow completely bonkers and totally forgettable in the same moment.

'A Quiet Place' (2018) Movie Review

Parenting is hard. Especially when even the slightest noise attracts the unwanted attention of a toothy, angry, altogether terrifying creature that will then rip the entrails from both you and your spawn.

'Okja' (2017) Movie Review

Outside of the fact that he makes great movies, my favorite thing about Bong Joon-ho is that you never know to expect from one project to the next. The South Korean director has turned out the greatest modern creature feature with The Host, which is still so much more than just that. His resume also includes murder mysteries (Mother, Memories of Murder), post-apocalyptic sci-fi set entirely on a moving train (Snowpiercer), and even black comedy (Barking Dogs Never Bite). Bong’s latest, Okja, fits into his larger body of work by being both utterly fantastic and unlike anything he’s done before, despite the presence of a fantastic beast.

'Okja' Trailer: Meet The Most Adorable Super Pig

Any Bong Joon-ho movie is worth getting excited about. But when it’s about a little girl trying to rescue her best friend, a best friend that just happens to be a giant pig monster, it has my full attention. The Korean auteur’s latest premieres at Cannes tomorrow, and Netflix dropped a wonderful new trailer for Okja.

Gawk At Jake Gyllenhaal's Snazzy Mustache In Bong Joon-Ho's 'Okja,' Plus Plot Details

Snowpiercer mastermind Bong Joon-ho making a giant monster movie is automatically an event worth celebrating. His The Host is one of the greatest modern creature features, so his upcoming Okja is high up on my list of “oh hell yeah” movies. And if that’s not enough to stoke the fires, hopefully this photo of Jake Gyllenhaal and his delightful mustache will do the trick. (There are also a few other photos and a long, detailed plot synopsis, which are all great, but I’d watch any movie for this particular Gyllenhaal steez alone.)

Oops, Anne Hathaway Got Drunk And Picked Up A Giant Monster In This 'Colossal' Trailer

Don’t you hate it when you wake up from a night of hard partying, hung over, vaguely smelly, and in control of a massive monster wreaking havoc on the other side of the world? Oh wait, maybe that only happens to Anne Hathaway in Nacho Vigalondo’s Colossal. I’d swear that happened to me once, but it may just be this new trailer.

'Colossal' Trailer: Anne Hathaway Has A Giant Monster

I’ve been over-the-moon psyched for Colossal every since hearing the words “Nacho Vigalondo” and “giant monster movie” in the same sentence. Then the Spanish director put together a top-tier cast—Anne Hathaway, who I’m meh about, and Dan Stevens, who I’m very, very not meh about. Word out of the TIFF premiere last fall confirmed my excitement was justified, and the first trailer is right in my wheelhouse.

'Kong: Skull Island' Trailer Doesn't Skimp On The Monkey

One of the biggest knocks on Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla reboot was that the titular King of the Monsters only actually appeared on screen for like ten minutes or whatever. Judging by this new trailer, that’s not going to be an issue for Kong: Skull Island. Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kings of Summer) and company certainly don’t skimp on the monkey.

Bong Joon-Ho's Netflix Creature Feature 'Okja' Digs Up New Plot And Character Details

South Korean auteur Bong Joon-ho is the mastermind behind one of the greatest modern creature features, The Host. So when we heard he’s returning to monster movie territory with the upcoming Okja, we were understandably stoked. Then he put together an incredible international cast along the same lines as Snowpiercer, and we started drooling. Now some new details have slithered out, and we may or may not have started dancing around the office with glee.

Bong Joon-Ho's Monster Movie 'Okja' Is Putting Together The Best Cast

Any time Bong Joon-ho makes a movie, it’s well worth getting your panties in a bunch over. The guy is a goddamned hit factory—Snowpiercer, Mother, The Host. But when he makes a monster movie, one with an insanely great cast, that’s the kind of thing that gets you dancing around the room in giddy anticipation.

This 'Space Monster Numagirasu' Trailer Is Old School Creature Feature Awesomeness

Godzilla is obviously the King of the Monsters, but if you’re a fan of giant Japanese monster movies, you have a while to wait before we see him on the big screen again. The good news is, this trailer for Space Monster Numagirasu may be just what you’re looking for in the meantime.

'Godzilla' Movie Review

When you heard that Godzilla was getting another American remake, you weren’t the only one to release a groan and ask, “really?” Toho’s venerable giant, destructive lizard played a key part in many of our youths, and Roland Emmerich’s 1998 attempt to bring the big guy across the ocean was so bad that the foul taste still lingers in many of our mouths. As good as director Gareth Edward’s reboot has looked, and as excited as we wanted to get, we had to keep our expectations and enthusiasm in check. Lucky for us, Edwards loves this big green bastard as much as we do, and that fact is evident in every frame. Not without flaws, Godzilla is huge, epic, and most importantly, a ridiculous amount of fun.

That Certainly Is One 'Big Ass Spider' Trailer

Can I get a hell yeah? Can I get an amen? More importantly, can it already be October 18 so I can watch the hell out of Big Ass Spider? Since I haven’t been able to crack that whole time travel thing, it looks like we’re all going to have to wait, but until then we have this ridiculous new trailer to tide us over. The best part about this is that, not matter how absurd this creature feature may be, the giant titular arachnid actually looks pretty damn awesome.

'Pacific Rim' Movie Review

There are going to be people who absolutely hate Pacific Rim, and with good reason. Guillermo del Toro’s highly anticipated mech versus monster adventure is a big, clunky mess. The movie is 20 minutes too long, and you can pick apart just about every element. But on the other end of the spectrum, you’ll find people like me, who totally love Pacific Rim. My reaction to this movie is similar The Dark Knight Rises. All of the criticisms leveled at it are legitimate complaints, and when you break it down, there are big problems. I recognized all of this while I watched the film, but that didn’t impact my enjoyment one iota.

More Robots Fighting Monsters In The Latest 'Pacific Rim' Trailer

So if anyone needs me I’ll just be over here giggling and squealing until "Pacific Rim" comes out on July 12. Until then, enjoy the latest trailer for Guillermo del Toro's epic monsters versus robots adventure.

New 'Pacific Rim' Footage Shows A Giant Robot Playing Baseball With A Ship

There are few words to desribe how much I love this new trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming giant monsters versus giant robots adventure “Pacific Rim.” When I first laid eyes on this new footage from WonderCon, I started giggling and clapping. The people sitting around cast awkward glances at the grown ass man burbling in the corner like an idiot. But you know what? Totally worth it.
