The 2020 Oscar Nominations Are Here

So, the Oscar nominations are here. I’m not trying to sound too cool, but I don’t really care. I barely pay attention the awards in the groups that I vote for, and as usual, the Academy Awards don’t share my particular taste. For the most part, the nominees are safe and expected and what they are.

The 2019 Seattle Film Critics Society Award Nominees

It’s that time of year again. The calendar is running out, the holidays loom on the horizon, and every turns to the past year to reflect and examine. And for film critics, that means looking over the movie offerings and evaluating the haul. 'Silence' (2016) Movie Review

Martin Scorsese is one of those filmmakers who’s reached such a status he can do whatever the hell he wants. And with good reason. It’s been in the works since 1990, but the Goodfellas mastermind finally ushered his adaptation of Shusaku Endo’s 1966 novel, Silence (previously adapted by Masahiro Shinoda in 1971), to the big screen. The result of this passion project is bloated, plodding, overindulgent, and 161 minutes of 17th century Japanese peasants being tortured so a white dude can learn a lesson about his faith. Though I’m not entirely certain he learns anything at all.

And we’re talking biggies here, too, like Oscar, not just some random Seattle film asshole’s end of the year top ten list. Such is the case with his latest, Silence, though it’s been a tight race to see if it would squeak in under the deadline and make the cut for 2016. This has now been decided with a resounding yes, and there’s a tense new trailer just in case you need extra motivation to get up for a Martin Scorsese movie. Check it out after the jump.

'The Wolf Of Wall Street' Movie Review

You learn right away what you've gotten yourself into with “The Wolf of Wall Street.” Among the first things director Martin Scorsese shows you are a group of rabid, feral stockbrokers, cranked out of their minds on cocaine, testosterone, and adrenaline, throwing dwarves at a target; and Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) doing blow out of a prostitute’s lady parts. And from there the movie gets crazy.
