The 2019 Seattle Film Critics Society Award Winners

As 2019 winds to a close, before we look at what’s next, it’s a time for reflection. In movie terms, that means glancing back over the past year and taking stock of the films we saw. I’m fortunate enough to be a member of a couple groups of film critics, and one, the Seattle Film Critics Society, just revealed the results of the 2019 SFCS Awards.

'Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker' D23 Teaser Hints At Big Things To Come

Yeah, Disney owns everything and that hegemony has already had a negative impact on the movie world. (Films have been cancelled, they’ve shuttered arms that handle smaller films, it’s now more difficult if not impossible for rep theaters to screen certain titles, etc.) But I remain 100% on the hook for all things Star Wars and this latest look at Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker gives me chills.

'The Dead Don't Die' (2019) Movie Review

bill murray, chloe sevigny, and adam driver stare at carnage

The Dead Don’t Die is a movie that, on paper, sounds fabulous. Indie icon Jim Jarmusch assembled an amazing cast—Bill Murray, Adam Driver, Chloe Sevigny, Tom Waits, Steve Buscemi, Tilda Swinton, Danny Glover, and a murderer’s row of others—and the last time splashed around in the horror pool we got Only Lovers Left Alive, one of my favorites of 2014. But goddamn if this doesn’t miss in every conceivable way.

'The Dead Don't Die' Trailer: Jim Jarmusch Made A Zombie Movie With An Insane Cast

Danny Glover, Bill Murray, and Adam Driver as sheriffs.

When you think of Jim Jarmusch, you probably think minimalist indie dramas with a brooding tone and undercurrent of strangeness that focus on unusual, off-kilter characters. Horror might not be the first thing that springs to mind. The director took a stab at vampires with Only Lovers Left Alive, which is great, and he’s returning to horror with the upcoming zombie film The Dead Don’t Die. And I’m here for it. Check out the first trailer below.

'The Dead Don't Die': Jim Jarmusch Is Filming A Zombie Movie With Bill Murray, Adam Driver, And Selena Gomez

Indie auteur Jim Jarmusch isn’t usually associated with horror. Sure, he made a vampire movie with Only Lovers LeftAlive, which I love, but it is, as expected, an artsy, existential love story that just happens to feature immortal, blood-sucking rockers. But apparently he has a secret zombie film on the way called The Dead Don’t Die, and it stars Bill Murray, Adam Driver, Chloe Sevigny, and Selena Gomez.

Steven Soderbergh's 'Logan Lucky' Trailer Is Low-Down And Dirty

Steven Soderbergh and I have very different definitions of retirement. I’m happy for that fact, though, because it means he keeps churning out fantastic work like The Knick and his upcoming hillbilly heist movie, Logan Lucky. We’re still a month-plus out, but this should serve to brighten up an otherwise sparse looking August, and there’s a new trailer to whet your whistle.

'Paterson' (2016) Movie Review

Jim Jarmusch’s Paterson is a movie about small things. It’s about finding the beauty in simplicity and the little ways we’re all creative. Almost nothing happens. That’s sure to turn off many viewers. But that’s also the entire point.

'Silence' (2016) Movie Review

Martin Scorsese is one of those filmmakers who’s reached such a status he can do whatever the hell he wants. And with good reason. It’s been in the works since 1990, but the Goodfellas mastermind finally ushered his adaptation of Shusaku Endo’s 1966 novel, Silence (previously adapted by Masahiro Shinoda in 1971), to the big screen. The result of this passion project is bloated, plodding, overindulgent, and 161 minutes of 17th century Japanese peasants being tortured so a white dude can learn a lesson about his faith. Though I’m not entirely certain he learns anything at all.

'Silence' Trailer: Martin Scorsese Makes Andrew Garfield Look Like Jesus

Any Martin Scorsese movie is going to be an automatic awards contender; that’s just a fact. And we’re talking biggies here, too, like Oscar, not just some random Seattle film asshole’s end of the year top ten list. Such is the case with his latest, Silence, though it’s been a tight race to see if it would squeak in under the deadline and make the cut for 2016. This has now been decided with a resounding yes, and there’s a tense new trailer just in case you need extra motivation to get up for a Martin Scorsese movie. Check it out after the jump.

Check Out These 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Character Posters

Movie fans, and really even non-movie fans, around the world are all kinds of amped up about the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It’s to the point where we’re pouring over every frame of the most recent trailer, examining any toy or coloring book we can get our hands on, and reading into every last image trying to glean any possible nugget of information. Lucasfilm just released a handful of new character posters, and while they don’t reveal much in the way of information, they are damn cool.

'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Footage Hands A Lightsaber To John Boyega

Jumping Jesus on a pogo stick. It really doesn’t take much to get me excited. Star Wars: The Force Awakens just did it with a few seconds of new footage. But what a few seconds. Holy shit. Check out the Instagram post below.

Check Out These New 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Photos, Plus New Kylo Ren Details

As of yesterday, we know that we’re not going to see any new footage of Star Wars: The Force Awakens—not a trailer or anything else—come out of D23 this weekend (I'm hoping for some Rogue One information, or maybe they'll confirm this or this). But don’t worry if that quick snipped of new footage the other day left you starving for more, because this morning arrived with a bunch of new photos to peruse.

Check Out These 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Photos

Star Wars Day, May 4th (“May the Fourth Be With You”), was this week, and with so much from the beloved franchise going on this year, there was a lot to celebrate. One of the biggest things to come out was a spread of photos from Vanity Fair of the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens. (We also learned that the second so-called standalone “anthology” film, formerly to be directed by Fantastic Four helmer Josh Trank, will be a Boba Fett origin story, which gives us mixed feelings.) Check them out after the jump.
