The 2023 Oscar Winners

It doesn’t always happen, in fact it’s pretty rare, but every once in a while my movie tastes line up with the Oscars. This just so happens to be one of those years. Everything Everywhere All at Once was easily my favorite movie of 2022 and it won, well, damn near everything. And now we can officially call her Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh, which is pretty fantastic.

Movies are pretty cool. A bold statement, I know. One of the perks (responsibilities that require additional work) of this job is that at the end of the year I get to shout out my favorite films by voting in a number of film critic groups. One that’s near and dear to my heart is the Seattle Film Critics Society in my hometown, and, wouldn’t you know it, we just announced our nominations.

So, the Oscars were last night. That happened. As usual, I like some of the choices, hate others, and haven’t seen most of the movie if I’m being honest. I’m sure they’re lovely and as good as people say, but year by year, decreasing exponentially, I find I have less and less interest in the Academy Awards. I’m not trying to sound cool, but there are thousands of other movies I’d rather watch. That’s all.

Hey, the Oscar nominations are here. Aren’t you stoked? Yeah, me neither. A lot of friends get really excited, but increasingly these have become less and less significant to me personally, and this year goes way beyond even my usual indifference. Sure, I’ll watch the telecast, but it’s mostly for the bombast and spectacle rather than any actual investment.

Whether you pay much attention to movies or not, you probably know last night was the 91st Academy Awards. Or at least that they handed out the iconic trophies last night, I didn’t know it was year 91 off the top of my head either. It’s a time for Hollywood to pat itself on the back, dish out some Oscars, and supposedly celebrate the best films of the previous year. I dislike it, quite a bit. It’s award season, mother fuckers! I’m fortunate enough to be part of the inaugural class of the Seattle Film Critics Society (they shot down my name suggestion: Seattle Movie Nerd Party Club). As 2017 wraps up (high fives to everyone for making it through this clusterfuck of a year!) it’s that time where groups and guilds and collections of people who watch a lot of movies get together to vote for the best of the year. I’m fortunate enough to be a part of a couple of these groups (because my opinion is the best one, obviously), including the newly minted Seattle Film Critics Society.

2016 saw the establishment of the Seattle Film Nerd Party Club (actually, it’s the Seattle Film Critics Society, but I’m going to keep using my preferred moniker until it sticks, so get used to it). And like every other critic’s group, we have our own awards. The nominations came down a while back, but today brings the announcement of the winners of the 2016 Seattle Film Awards (I have my fingers crossed for a live cable-access telecast hosted by the ghost of J.P. Patches for next year).
