'Gemini Man' (2019) Movie Review

It’s going to be weird to talk about Gemini Man, Ang Lee’s new Old-Will-Smith-versus-Young-Will-Smith action movie. Not because of the plot or acting or story or any of the usual suspects—though there is, as always, much to discus in those arenas—but because of the technology used to make it. By its very nature, this is going to create multiple different viewing experiences, even more so than the usual 3D, IMAX, etc. format choices, and potentially have more of an impact.

Harley Quinn Is The One They Should Be Afraid Of In The First 'Birds Of Prey' Trailer

Suicide Squad may have been a mess, with a million cuts and major studio interference, but one thing was clear, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn was a breakout character. If there’s anything worth watching in that movie, it’s her. And now she’s back, and she’s bringing some friends. Check out the first trailer for Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of Harley Quinn. Yes, that’s the full title, but we’ll just call it Birds of Prey because we’re not masochists.

Movie Review: '10 Cloverfield Lane'

Since it came out in 2008, there’s been chatter about a follow up to found footage creature feature Cloverfield. Just a few months back, the notoriously mysterious Bad Robot dropped a surprise trailer for something called 10 Cloverfield Lane (up to that point it had been developing under the working title Valencia), which appeared to be, at least tangentially, related to the earlier film. To be honest, it’s really a sequel in name only. While Cloverfield is big and bombastic—and, in my opinion, wildly overrated—10 Cloverfield Lane is a small, taut, claustrophobic psychological thriller with a serious Twilight Zone vibe. If it wasn’t for the title, there’s very little to connect it to its predecessor, but that doesn’t matter because it’s a damn good time.

First Trailer For Bad Robot's Mysterious '10 Cloverfield Lane,' Plus Poster And Release Date

Well, the Bad Robot mystery box is back at it again. There’s been talk of a secretive Cloverfield tie-in coming for some time, but we just got a new trailer, poster, and imminent release date for the project, apparently called 10 Cloverfield Lane (it was earlier known by the title Valencia). Who knows how this connects to the found footage monster movie, or if that’s just a tease, but this first look is something I’m totally into.

'The Thing' Movie Review

Antarctica is a great setting for a horror movie. You’re in the most remote, desolate, deadly corner of the planet, where the weather can change moods at the drop of a hat, where you can freeze to death before you know it, and where if something goes wrong you’re just screwed, simple as that. When you see footage of the barren, wind swept landscape it’s easy to imagine why Lovecraft set “At the Mountains of Madness” in such a spot, it’s like an entire continent trying to drive you crazy and murder every living thing besides penguins. It is a landscape rife with an inherent tension, a tension that is largely underused by “The Thing”, director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s new prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 film, oddly enough, also called “The Thing”.
