Ticket sales at the box office may have been at a 20-year low
in 2014, but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t anything worth seeing. I’m a firm
believer that, no matter the state of the industry, there will always be people
making exciting, interesting films, you just might have to look for them.
Regardless of what this means for studios and their bottom lines, sci-fi fans
had a lot to dig into over the past year. There were huge, spectacle style
blockbusters right along side quiet, introspective independent features more
concerned with ideas than eye candy, as well as everything in between. There
are a few gaps in my genre viewing for the year—I still have yet to watch
titles like Young Ones, The Zero Theorem,
and Under the Skin for some reason—but in this spirit, here
are my top ten (actually eleven) sci-fi movies of 2014.

Brent's Top Ten Movies Of 2014
Every year I tell myself I’m not going to make an
end-of-year top ten list. I hate ranking films, but every year I cave and wind
up throwing together a collection that I’m wholly unsatisfied with, and 2014 is
proving to be no exception. Despite the fact that it was a terrible year in
terms of overall box office receipts, that doesn’t mean there weren’t tons of
great movies to be seen. I’m a firm believer that, no matter how fucked up the
movie industry gets, there will always be people out there making interesting,
worthwhile, badass cinema, you only have to look for it. Just check out all the
amazing work on television right now, and all the big name filmmakers who are
migrating that way in search of creative freedom. There will always be
compelling stories being told.

'Snowpiercer' Movie Review
For fans of international cinema, the news that South Korean
director Bong Joon-ho is making a new movie is enough to start you salivating.
All he’s done over the last ten plus years is turn out hit after hit, like
Memories of Murder, Mother, and
The Host—the good one with monsters, not the crappy one by
the lady who wrote Twilight. The news only got better from
there. This film was going to be his English-language debut—as much as the
presence of subtitles don’t sway me one little bit, I do sometimes feel like I
miss details. Then we found out this was going to be a post-apocalyptic story,
another plus, and he together an incredible cast of actors from around the
globe.

Comic Review: 'Snowpiercer Volume 1: The Escape'
We’ve been waiting a long time to see director Bong
Joon-ho’s English-language debut Snowpiercer. Even though
the tedious back and forth between the filmmaker and the Weinstein Company over
crippling edits is reportedly done, a release is still likely way off in the
distance. And that’s only if you happen to be lucky enough to live in one of
the limited number of markets where TWC plans to show the film. Though we may
have to sit and stew a while longer before we see the adaptation, the French graphic
novels the movie is based on are getting an English translation for the first
time. And they are well worth the wait.

International Trailer For Bong Joon-Ho's 'Snowpiercer' Is Epic And Badass
“Snowpiercer,”
the English-language debut of South Korean director Bong Joon-ho, is one of my
most anticipated movies of 2013. I can’t wait to see what the guy behind “The
Host” is going to do with an apocalyptic ice age and endlessly moving train. While
we don’t have a North American release date (Korea will get it on August 1),
now we have this international trailer—the first—to start you salivating. There
isn’t much more to say other than watch this video, watch it now, watch it
often.
