'Doctor Sleep' (2019) Movie Review

Despite critical pans on its initial release, Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining became one of the most acclaimed horror movies of all time. Much to the chagrin of Stephen King, who wrote the novel the film adapts, and who famously hates the movie. In 2013, 36 years later, King published the sequel, Doctor Sleep. Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of the follow up attempts to reconcile the two conflicting sides and, with reverence for both Kubrick and King, mostly succeeds.

And the Stephen King cinematic renaissance continues. In our new quest to adapt every last iota of the horror master’s work, here comes In the Tall Grass, based on a novella by King and his son, Joe Hill, who is a badass horror writer in his own right. Written and directed by Vincenzo Natali (Splice), Netflix dropped the first trailer. True to form, it’s creepy and strange and everything is not as it initially appears. Check it out below.

It’s well-known that Stephen King has never been a fan of Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of The Shining, but it’s still one of the best movies, horror or otherwise, ever made. That really has nothing to do with anything, but we’re talking about Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of King’s Doctor Sleep, the sequel to The Shining, so it seemed worth noting. Both a new film from Flanagan (Oculus, Hush) and adaptation of the horror master himself are worth celebrating, and now we have the first trailer for Doctor Sleep. Take a gander.

'Pet Sematary' (2019) Movie Review

Stephen King has been going through an epic cinematic renaissance lately. We’ve seen a glut of fantastic, interesting big and small screen takes on the horror master’s work—and maybe one not so great attempt, sorry Dark Tower fans. The latest endeavor is a reworking of his 1983 novel Pet Sematary from directors Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch, the duo behind indie horror hit Starry Eyes. And it’s…fine.

Then again, I haven’t seen the movie, but the trailers, including this new, final trailer, appear to reveal some things. But what the hell. I’m all kinds of jazzed about this regardless, though I’m pretty indifferent to spoilers and such. Maybe tread lightly. Or maybe that's what they mean when they say there's a price to be paid.

“Sometimes dead is better.” We can go back and forth all day about the value of remakes and reboots and whatnot, but in the end, as long as a movie delivers the goods, who really cares about the origins or source material? And I know this is just a trailer, and I know we still have to wait until April of next year, but this first trailer for the new adaptation of Stephen King’s Pet Sematary looks like it has the right stuff. 'It' (2017) Movie Review

After years of best laid plans, multiple filmmakers, and an endless stream of herky jerk starts and stops, a big-screen adaptation of Stephen King’s horror novel, It, finally arrives in theaters. Maybe the best-loved book by one of the world’s best-loved authors, fans have been on edge about this—King adaptations haven’t always been…good. But It stands at or at least near the top of heap in terms of quality. Eerie, atmospheric, and true to the book in the best ways, despite large-scale changers, It should satisfy both extant fans and horror enthusiasts alike.
