This 'Godzilla: King Of The Monsters' Trailer Is Mostly Monsters

The biggest problem with Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla reboot is that it eschews the titular monster in favor or lackluster (read: whack-as-hell) human characters. Sorry, no one wants to see Aaron Taylor-Johnson wooden act his way through scene after scene when we could be hanging out with the King of the Monsters. Before he tussles with King Kong, Godzilla gets another solo joint courtesy of Krampus director Michael Dougherty. Judging from this new Godzilla: King of the Monsters trailer, this movie rectifies the woeful lack of monsters in a big way.

I was out of town all weekend, nothing interesting happened in the realm of movies or general pop culture, right? Oh wait, San Diego Comic-Con went down, so the studios unveiled a glut of new shiny new promotional material for their upcoming slates of major motion pictures. (You know, because Comic-Con is all about movie not actual comics.) As usual, there’s a ton of stuff to sift through, but because this isn’t my day job anymore, I’m only going to focus on the ones that I find particularly interesting or that appeal to my peculiar sensibilities: Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Aquaman, Glass, and Shazam!

The First 'Headshot' Trailer Is A Perfect Mix Of Machetes, Gun Play, And Face Kicking

Never fuck with an amnesiac. One, it makes you a total dick, and two, movies have taught us that they are all secret badasses just waiting to dismantle you for crossing them and the ones they love. That’s more or less what we get in the first teaser trailer for the Iko Uwais-starring Headshot from the Mo Brothers. And is looks exactly as brutal and ruthless as I hoped.

Al Leong was a mainstay of my youth. Showing up in the likes of Die Hard, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Big Trouble in Little China, and countless other movies that defined my life (not to mention TV shows like Magnum P.I., Airwolf, The Equalizer, The Fall Guy, and on and on and on), he was a ubiquitous presence. As the latest trailer for documentary Henchman: The Al Leong Story says, “In the ‘80s, there was one man who set the standard for all henchmen to come…” and they’re not wrong. As much as I dig post-apocalyptic movies, I’m self-aware enough to know my particular skillset is all but useless after civilization crumbles and the world goes to shit. I’m fucked six ways to Sunday, that’s all there is to it. But so are Gabriel Diani and Etta Devine, a comedy duo and the leads of Diani & Devine Meet the Apocalypse. The crowdfunded end-of-the-world comedy dropped a new trailer, and from the look of things, these kids are having a rough go of it. Good to know I won’t be alone.

This New 'Luke Cage' Trailer Is So Badass

Thus far, I’m all-in when it come to Marvel’s episodic Netflix universe. Daredevil is a leaps and bounds beyond the Ben Affleck-fronted cinematic travesty. Jessica Jones made superheroes feel fresh and vital in a way most similar properties lack in modern times. While we met him, Luke Cage is next up, and though we still have a couple months to wait, this badass new trailer should get you pumped up.

Considering how much I have come to adore Vin Diesel for his over-the-top action spectacles, the fact that seems like a genuine, earnest dude, and his deep commitment to being a complete and utter nerd, his 2002 actioner xXx is not one I’ve ever been able to get behind. It’s not one of his finest moments. But apparently there was enough interest to make xXx: The Return of Xander Cage happen. (More accurately, Diesel had enough interest—the man has an endearing force of will to make whatever the hell he wants happen.) The unnecessary film just dropped its first trailer. The result is bugnuts fucking crazy and I’m now 100% enamored.

'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' Just Dropped A Ton Of Incredible Footage

We live in a magical time where we’re going to get a new Star Wars movie roughly every year for the foreseeable future. That’s enough to make my childhood self retroactively explode with glee. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the first of the series of films to exist outside of the main narrative line of that far, far away galaxy, is up next, and Lucasfilm just dropped this awesome new behind the scenes look. Attach Kim Jee-woon’s name to any film and I’m there. A Bittersweet Life is one of my three favorite movies of all time, I Saw the Devil is a revenge masterpiece, and The Good, the Bad, the Weird is a straight up berserk. Hell, I even dig his English-language debut, the Arnold Schwarzenegger-fronted actioner, The Last Stand, though it is admittedly the weakest link in his otherwise sterling canon. The director is back working in South Korea for the first time since 2010, and just dropped the first trailer for his period drama The Age of Shadows (formerly titled Secret Agent). Though it’s woefully underappreciated Stateside, Indonesia has carved out a solid spot when it comes to international horror. (There is a long history with Indonesia and horror, one of my favorites is still 1981’s Mystics in Bali.) Writer/director Awi Suryadi won some new devotees in 2015 with the eerie-ass clown horror Badoet, and he’s back for another tear around the genre with Danur. 'Star Trek Beyond': Watch Everyone Be Sad In The Final Trailer

We’re just a few weeks away from Star Trek Beyond, which feels strange to say as there’s been a noticeable lack of hype surrounding the film—at least aside from the backlash stirred up by the first trailer. Maybe Paramount is still shell-shocked by the hatred for Star Trek Into Darkness (which, despite its reputation for being critically panned, has an 86% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes). But there is a new “final” trailer to check out, and it’s a total downer.

This 'Mechanic: Resurrection' Trailer Gives Tommy Lee Jones A Kick Ass Soul Patch

The original Mechanic—the 1972, Michael Winner-directed, Charles Bronson and Jan-Michael Vincent-starring original, not the 2011 remake—is one of my all-time favorites. While the Jason Statham-fronted update doesn’t live up to that, it’s a fun enough DTV-style actioner, the kind that only comes to theaters when Statham takes the lead. It was apparently successful enough to warrant a sequel, and Mechanic: Resurrection just dropped a first trailer.

'The Girl With All The Gifts' Trailer Is Grim And Intense

At this stage of the game, it’s damn near impossible to tell a good, unique zombie story. Even when there are gems, you have to dig through fields of shit to get there, but there may be some hope on the horizon. While it doesn’t appear to be super groundbreaking (this is definitely a child of Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later), The Girl With All The Gifts, could breathe a bit of new life into the genre. To this day, I still maintain that Hard Target, yes, the one with Jean-Claude Van Damme sporting that Jheri curl mullet, is John Woo’s best American film. If nothing else, it’s the most similar to the classics he built his reputation on, like Hard Boiled, The Killer, and A Better Tomorrow. Talk of Hard Target 2 swirled around last year, and apparently that was more than internet hearsay, as it just dropped a trailer. And against all odds, it looks awesome.
