'The Furious' (2025) Movie Review

Kenji Tanigaki’s The Furious is the action movie of the year. It may be the action movie of a few years, because holy hell does it go hard. If having the legendary stunt coordinator and action director in the big chair didn’t already pique your interest, he also enlisted the great Kensuke Sonomura—director of Ghost Killer, Hydra, and Bad City, as well as all around stunt badass—as his action director. Add to this mix a cast fronted by Miao Xie (An Eye For an Eye) and Joe Taslim (The Night Comes For Us), and that heavily features Joey Iwanaga (Baby Assassins 2), Brian Le (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Yayan Ruhian (The Raid), and even an appearance by Jeeja Yanin (Chocolate), and this is action-movie-fan-Christmas.

'Boy Kills World' (2024) Movie Review

You know the story well. In a dystopian world, the despotic siblings who rule with an iron fist murder a family who opposes them. The only survivor, a young boy, left deaf and mute by the experience, trains his entire life with a very stoned shaman for a mission of revenge with only the mental incarnation of his dead sister and his internal monologue, the voice of his favorite childhood video game, for company. Yeah, that old yarn, right?  And thus, we have Boy Kills World. 

'Skylines' (2020) Movie Review

It happens often that a movie, usually a major studio production, aims to kick off a franchise, only for it to be a no-go. It also happens, in rarer occasions, that a movie aiming to kick off a theatrical franchise flops, but a franchise happens anyway, usually in the hallowed, at least around here, halls of DTV. Sometimes a series pops up where no one expected.

'Foxtrot Six' Teaser: Watch This Incredibly Badass Indonesian Sci-Fi/Action Trailer

Mario Kassar is best known for producing movies like Total Recall, First Blood, Terminator 2, and a certain style of American action movie through his Carolco Pictures. But he’s apparently teaming with Indonesian filmmakers to develop Foxtrot Six, an action/sci-fi film starring the likes of Julie Estelle, Hammer Girl from The Raid 2, and Oka Antara (The Raid 2, Killers). It’s been in the works for a while, but the first teaser dropped today. Check it out.

John Wick 3 Casts A Bunch Of Stars, Gets Exponentially More Badass

What would a movie about a hitman on the run be without a bunch of people to shoot? John Wick has never had a lack of targets, and the upcoming John Wick: Chapter 3—possibly titled John Wick: Parabellum—just added a crazy ton of actors. The list includes Halle Berry, Anjelica Huston, Jason Mantzoukas, Asia Kate Dillon, Mark Dascascos, and most importantly, at least from my perspective, Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif Rahman from The Raid and Man of Tai Chi and Triple Threat star Tiger Chen.

So far, December 15 is shaping up to be the best day of my calendar year. Not only does Star Wars: The Last Jedi open, but Amazon drops the first season of Jean-Claude Van Johnson, and the after-the-fact sci-fi sequel Beyond Skyline also hits. It feels like 75% of what I’ve written about recently involves Beyond Skyline, and that’s fine with me. Not a fan of the 2010 alien invasion yarn, Skyline, the after-the-fact sequel looks completely badass. And that includes this new U.S. trailer. Perhaps even more exciting than that, is there’s now a confirmed release date on American soil, which is a pretty sweet indeed.

The 2010 alien invasion film Skyline is not, how to put this delicately, good. In fact, it’s bad. Which is a shame. It had potential, but instead it’s just shitty. It was, however, cheap ($10 million). And it did make some money ($66 million worldwide), but not the kind of scratch that automatically makes one think of sequels. But against all odds, a sequel has been in the works for a while and this trailer for Beyond Skyline has everything I like: sci-fi, Frank Grillo, Iko Uwais, and Yayan Ruhian fighting aliens. Go figure.
