'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Footage Hands A Lightsaber To John Boyega

Jumping Jesus on a pogo stick. It really doesn’t take much to get me excited. Star Wars: The Force Awakens just did it with a few seconds of new footage. But what a few seconds. Holy shit. Check out the Instagram post below.

Well, now we know who Kylo Ren is fighting on that snow-covered planet.

This whole video is made up of four shots, two of which we’ve seen before (one from that Korean TV spot, one from the first trailer), but damn if that last shot doesn’t make up for it. We saw John Boyega’s Finn wield a lightsaber in that awesome Drew Struzan poster out of D23, but now we know for sure that he actually gets in on the action in the film, and against the villainous Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) no less.

This is sure to spark debate about whether or not Finn is a Jedi, not to mention, gasp, a black guy holding using a lightsaber (there was a similar backlash at the idea of a black man as a stormtrooper, but need I remind you that Finn won’t be the first black man with a lightsaber, have we forgotten Mace Windu so soon?). Perhaps he is strong with the Force, or perhaps he simply armed himself with whatever weapon was most readily available. We know this lightsaber, which appears to be the one lost by Luke Skywalker at the end of The Empire Strikes Back, plays an integral part of the plot in The Force Awakens, so it’ll be around.

We’ll have to wait and see when Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens everywhere on December 18.
