'M3GAN' (2023) Movie Review

If you look at M3GAN, the new dancing uncanny valley murder doll movie from Blumhouse, writers Akela Cooper and James Wan (the duo behind Malignant), and director Gerard Johnston (Housebound), and think, “Hell yeah,” you’ll probably have a fine time. What’s fun about it is really damn fun, equal parts campy, goofy, and spooky. In these moments, it knows precisely what movie it is, what the audience wants, and how to deliver exactly that. It's everything in between these fun bits, however, where the problems lie.

'The First Purge' (2018) Movie Review

When The First Purge, the latest in Blumhouse’s saga of a future where all crime is legal for one night, sticks to the horror elements that drive the franchise, it’s often quite effective. In short bursts, it taps an underlying sense of dread and evokes a visceral, gut-level terror. When the protagonists stumble their way through dark streets, pursued by gangs of giddily murderous revelers draped in eerie masks, it’s tense and scary and raw. The framework around these moments, however, doesn’t always support the weight.

'Truth Or Dare' (2018) Movie Review

Just because they have an Oscar on their resume thanks to Get Out, don’t expect low-budget horror factory Blumhouse to change its stripes anytime soon. And as if on cue, here comes Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare. Cheap, schlocky trash, it’s the cinematic equivalent of truck stop hotdog; it does the trick, but it’s all empty calories, immediately forgettable, and you’re hungry again as soon as it’s gone. But while it’s trash, it’s also modestly entertaining trash.
