'The Snowman' International Trailer: Detective Harry Hole Is On The Case

Okay, so Tomas Alfredson’s upcoming adaptation of Jo Nesbo’s serial killer thriller, The Snowman, looks grim, tense, and disturbing. What footage we’ve seen overflows with creepy imagery, it has a fantastic cast, and should be a white-knuckle ride later this fall. There’s nothing even remotely humorous about it. So why can’t I take it seriously? Why do I laugh every time it comes to mind? Because the protagonist’s name is Harry Hole, that’s why. Don’t get me wrong, the film still looks promising as all hell, but I know myself. I know I’m going to laugh inappropriately when the movie introduces Detective Harry Hole. That’s a fact. 'Alien: Covenant' (2017) Movie Review

In 2012, Ridley Scott ventured back to the site of one of his greatest cinematic triumphs with Prometheus. This sci-fi opus, set in the Alien universe and serving as a precursor to one of the all-time greats, is uneven at best. I’m a staunch defender—it’s ambitious, full of lofty themes, moody and tense and creepy all in a line with the original, not to mention gorgeous—but I understand where the detractors come from.

Okay, I’m beyond pumped for Alien: Covenant. I’m giddy that we’re just a few months away from a new, Ridley Scott-directed visit to the land of Xenomorphs and Face Huggers. But as jazzed as I am about this whole situation, the marketing has been way hit and miss. The first trailer was okay, bloody shower sex scene and all, but that prologue was whack as shit. Then the latest trailer made me giggle and squeal with vicious delight, but this latest viral video does absolutely nothing. Unless you care about how they make Michael Fassbender’s new android Walter.

Even if Prometheus left many folks cold (I totally dig it, though it’s certainly a deeply flawed film), it’s difficult not to get psyched about the idea of Ridley Scott making another movie set in the Alien universe. So it makes sense many of us are fiending hard for Alien: Covenant. We saw that brutal firsttrailer, and now 20th Century Fox released a short prologue film last night during Legion (you should also be watching Legion if you’re not). And here it is.

It was a merry Christmas, indeed. Not for the usual, warm, fuzzy, holiday nonsense that other people have been compelling me to endure for damn near 40 years against my will. No, on this day we set aside to celebrate fat dudes and the savior of humanity or whatever, I’m in a festive mood because we got our first look at Alien: Covenant, and holy shit balls. Like I said, merry Christmas, indeed.

I know it gets piles of hate, and it’s a deeply flawed film to be sure, but I still totally dig Prometheus. It’s grand and epic and ambitious, it’s as immersive a world as Ridley Scott has created in I don’t know how the hell long, and it’s badass as hell to boot. All of the criticisms are warranted, they just don’t impact my enjoyment like they do for many people.

Final 'X-Men: Apocalypse' Trailer Is Full Of Adventure And Surprises

While both Marvel and DC appear to have a roadmap for their respective superhero franchises—though they are certainly subject to change—20th Century Fox’s X-Men series has the feeling that they studio is just throwing things at the wall, seeing what sticks, and making it up as they go. They basically retconned the entire original timeline out of existence. It’s going to be interesting to see where they go with the latest installment, X-Men: Apocalypse. But as we approach the release date, we’ve got the final trailer, which arrives with some unexpected bits of fan service that are sure to make hardcore followers cheer in their seats. 'The Counselor' Movie Review

“The Counselor” is a movie I’ve been pumped up for since we first heard that Pulitzer Prize-winning author Cormac McCarthy delivered a screenplay instead of the new novel that his agents and publishers expected. Add director Ridley Scott (“Alien”) to the equation, and an insane cast of top tier, A-list celebrities, and you start to understand the excitement. Weirdly, there’s been almost no buzz leading up to the release. It didn’t play at any of the recent big name festivals, press screenings were all late so enough that no one has been talking about it, and why the hell does Cameron Diaz have a cheetah in all the trailers? Unfortunately, the movie falls way, way short of expectations. Roughly one-third is the precise movie I hoped for, while the rest is a complete and total disappointment.

'Haywire' Movie Review

“Haywire”, the new action movie from director Steven Soderbergh, has a serious direct-to-video vide. But it’s like the classiest DTV movie you’ve ever seen. Not only is the cast so far over the head of this style of film—not many straight up action flicks feature names the size of Ewan McGregor, Michel Douglas, Michael Fassbender, and Antonio Banderas, some, but not many—but Soderbergh’s hand is readily apparent. He adds many of his trademark visual and structural flourishes to spruce up the joint. “Haywire” is full of recognizable color and musical themes, a narrative that jumps around in time, tricky camera moves and angles, intricate depth of frame, even down to a planning montage that is reminiscent of his “Ocean’s” movies. “Haywire” isn’t going to blow your mind hole, or make you think too hard about important issues, but, especially given the massive delays in getting a release (Soderbergh was able to shoot and unleash “Contagion” before “Haywire” would ever see the light of day), it is a solid revenge-tinged actioner, full of kick ass brawls, chases, and a sly, self-deprecating sense of humor.

'Shame' Movie Review

Sitting in the theater watching Steve McQueen’s (“Hunger”) new film, the sexually charged “Shame”, I enjoyed it quite a bit.  Outside after the screening, another reviewer asked what I thought.  Seems like a straightforward enough question, but in trying to quantify my experience I froze, mouth open like a slack-jawed idiot.  He took my hesitation to mean that I didn’t like “Shame”.  He said he liked it a great deal, and we wandered down the escalator and out into the harsh light of day.
