'Venom: Let There Be Carnage' (2021) Movie Review
2018’s non-Marvel Marvel movie, Venom, is an odd beast. The movie isn’t particularly good. As a whole, it’s uninspired, messy, stuck in the late-1990s, and Sony’s legal inability to use Spider-Man, the titular antihero’s most notable nemesis, weighs on the film. But then there’s star Tom Hardy. Whatever movie he’s in, is a very different movie from everyone else. It’s basically Hardy arguing with himself for two hours, and it’s really damn entertaining in an unhinged, maybe he’s having an actual mental episode kind of way. Which brings us to the nigh-inevitable sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

'Black Widow' (2021) Movie Review
Ever wonder what Marvel Cinematic Universe staple Black Widow, aka Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), was up to betwixt the Wars Civil and Infinity? (And, you know, before the fate that ultimately befalls her in Avengers: Endgame?) As it turns out, she went on a wacky family vacation. Sort of. Sort of as in sort of wacky and sort of as in sort of family. Such is the tale told by her long-awaited first solo venture, Black Widow.

'Joker' Trailer: Joaquin Phoenix Is The Weird Guy On The Bus
One element fans often cite about what makes the Joker such a compelling character is that, for the most part, he lacks an origin story. Sure, there have been a few attempts to craft a history, but by and large, he lacks context and motivation and formative experiences. What we see is what we get, just his actions, often without obvious logic or reason. That’s going to change somewhat in Todd Phillips’ upcoming Joker, which stars a very committed Joaquin Phoenix in a standalone tale of the Clown Prince of Crime’s beginnings. Set to debut on the fall festival circuit soon, check out the final trailer below.

'Spider-Man: Far From Home' (2019) Movie Review
Just a heads up: talking about Spider-Man: Far from Home necessitates discussion of key events from Avengers: Infinity War. So, be warned if you’re one of the five people on Earth who hasn’t watched that particular motion picture yet.
If Avengers: Endgame felt like an end, like the closing of a door, Spider-Man: Far from Home plays almost like an epilogue at the end of a novel. It finds characters dealing with the fallout and contending with previous events. Time has passed, but even from the opening scene, the specter of loss looms large over the entire film.

But don’t worry, your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, Tom Holland, will also warn you. And wow, it’s been a busy weekend and I just looked at the box office numbers and, you know what, with a $2+ billion haul, there probably aren’t many of you who haven’t seen Endgame. Damn. Anyway, check out the trailer below.

The First 'Joker' Trailer Puts On A Happy Face
The old adage goes, there’s a fine line between comedy and tragedy, that the difference is a matter of perspective. And from what we see in the first trailer for Todd Phillips’ Joaquin Phoenix-starring Joker, that appears to be the underlying conceit for the origin story of the Clown Prince of Crime. The first trailer dropped this morning, and this certainly doesn’t feel like your typical comic book movie. Watch it below.

This 'Avengers: Endgame' Trailer Does Whatever It Takes
Now that you’ve all seen Captain Marvel—at least according to the numbers, statistically speaking, most of you have, unless you’re a butthurt manbaby who’s upset Marvel invited girls to play, too—it’s high time to turn our attention to the next installment of the episodic saga that is the MCU: Avengers: Endgame. And surprise, surprise, the Marvel marketing machine released another new trailer. Check it out below.

'Captain Marvel' (2019) Movie Review
After eleven years, 20 movies, and much brouhaha, with Captain Marvel, Marvel finally let one of their female characters lead an installment of their expansive cinematic universe, as well as hire a female (co-)director. The film has traits that make it unique and stand out, but at the same time, it often becomes a paint-by-numbers MCU origin story. Full of ups and downs, it’s still an engaging, entertaining addition, one that will have a lingering on-screen impact moving forward and also carries surplus revelatory weight simply by existing.

'Captain Marvel' Trailer: There's Two-Eyed Nick Fury And Brie Larson Punches An Old Lady
Oh hey, after however many dozens of movies Marvel has
cranked out in their expansive cinematic universe, we finally get one with a
female protagonist. It’s almost like women like things, make up half the
population, or that there are great female comic book characters to put on
screen. That sounds just crazy enough to work. All sarcasm aside, this first
Captain Marvel trailer looks damn sweet and I can’t wait,
especially because I’m pretty sure Brie Larson punches an old lady in the face,
and I think that’s funny because I am a bad person. Take a gander below.

SDCC Trailers: 'Godzilla: King Of The Monsters,' 'Aquaman,' 'Glass,' And 'Shazam!'
I was out of town all weekend, nothing interesting happened
in the realm of movies or general pop culture, right? Oh wait, San Diego Comic-Con
went down, so the studios unveiled a glut of new shiny new promotional material
for their upcoming slates of major motion pictures. (You know, because
Comic-Con is all about movie not actual comics.) As usual, there’s a ton of
stuff to sift through, but because this isn’t my day job anymore, I’m only
going to focus on the ones that I find particularly interesting or that appeal
to my peculiar sensibilities: Godzilla: King of the
Monsters, Aquaman, Glass, and
Shazam!
Check out all of the trailers below.

Scott Adkins Is An Assassin-Fighting Assassin In 'Accident Man' Trailer
When you think comic book movies, you probably think dudes
in tights and sky portals and that sort of nonsense. But there are also things
like crews of assassins to be found on the funny book pages, which is just what
we get from this Accident Man trailer. To be fair, that’s
not why I’m psyched about this movie. I’m psyched about this because of Scott Adkins. He’s one of the baddest dudes on the planet, this is one of his passion
projects, and he’s not only stars, he co-wrote the script.

San Diego Comic-Con Trailers For 'Thor: Ragnarok,' 'Ready Player One,' 'Stranger Things,' And More
San Diego Comic-Con went down this past weekend, and since the
focus is all about TV and movies rather than funny books, it arrived with a
tidal wave of trailers, posters, and other assorted promotional goodies for
upcoming blockbusters and highly anticipated television shows. Here are some of
the bigger and better trailer offerings, and just some of the things I’m most
excited for. There are more, but these are the ones I like.

'Wonder Woman' (2017) Movie Review
Here’s the bad news: Wonder Woman is a
flawed superhero origin story. Now that we have that out of the way, the good
news is that it’s mostly awesome, finally brings one of the greatest comic book
characters ever to the big screen after more than 75 years, breaks up just a
little bit of the boys’ club that is contemporary superhero movies, and is
easily the best thing the DC Extended Universe has produced thus far.

'Suicide Squad' (2016) Movie Review
Like the mismatched cadre of super villains of the title,
writer/director David Ayer’s Suicide Squad is chaotic and
frantic and all over the place. At times this fractured nature can be
propulsive and even invigorating. Other times—too often—this means the film is
a messy jumble, awkwardly paced, and sorely lacks focus or depth. It’s a mess.
An occasionally interesting mess, one not entirely without promise, but still a
mess.

'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows' (2016) Movie Review
2014’s big screen Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot was not a great movie. I don’t hate it with the fiery scorn
of many, but at best it’s a bland, unnecessary rehash of something done better
a number times. But it made boatloads of cash, so a sequel was green-lit opening
weekend, and now Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows
is here.

Final 'X-Men: Apocalypse' Trailer Is Full Of Adventure And Surprises
While both Marvel and DC appear to have a roadmap for their
respective superhero franchises—though they are certainly subject to change—20th
Century Fox’s X-Men series has the feeling that they studio
is just throwing things at the wall, seeing what sticks, and making it up as
they go. They basically retconned the entire original timeline out of
existence. It’s going to be interesting to see where they go with the latest
installment, X-Men: Apocalypse. But as we approach the
release date, we’ve got the final trailer, which arrives with some unexpected
bits of fan service that are sure to make hardcore followers cheer in their
seats. Watch it after the jump.

'Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice' (2016) Movie Review
There are a number of elements in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice that I think are great, and that fill me
with hope for the future of the burgeoning the DC Extended Universe. Which
makes it that much more frustrating that the latest superhero throwdown is such
a jumbled misfire, such a bloated, tedious slog, that it’s ultimately just not
good. Maybe it’s time that we, as a people, stop letting Zack Snyder do things.

DC/Vertigo's 'Scalped' Is Coming To TV, You Should Be Excited
Apparently I need to figure out a way to get WGN. I only
have a vague awareness that the network even a thing, with shows like
Manhattan and Outsiders, which looks like
something I might dig. But now they’ve got my attention as they’re working on a
series based on Jason Aaron’s incredible Native American-noir comic
Scalped.

Watch The 'Captain America: Civil War' Trailer, It's Better Than Anything Else You're Doing
Last night, getting ready to go to bed, I checked one last
time to see if the Captain America: Civil War trailer had
dropped. It had. I promptly watched it three times back-to-back-to-back. And
then I watched it two more times on my phone before I finally turned off the
lights. And a few times again this morning. Because this is Marvel we’re
talking about, rest assured that the next few months will be a monumental
deluge of clips, TV spots, and marketing of all stripes, but to be honest, I’d
be completely satisfied if they don’t release anything more than this trailer.

'Daredevil' Season 2 Just Cast The Punisher
The Punisher is one of my favorite comic
books, but it has not fared well when it comes to big screen adaptations. Part
of this is because the overtly violent, morally questionable (or repugnant if
you like) stance makes any adaptation a hard-R by necessity. Since
Daredevil became a hit on Netflix, with a darker, grittier
tone rather than the bright fun of Marvel Cinematic Universe, many have
wondered if the character could show up there. And now we know he will, and who
is going to play him. Get more after the jump.
