The 2023 Oscar Winners

everything everywhere all at once
It doesn’t always happen, in fact it’s pretty rare, but every once in a while my movie tastes line up with the Oscars. This just so happens to be one of those years. Everything Everywhere All at Once was easily my favorite movie of 2022 and it won, well, damn near everything. And now we can officially call her Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh, which is pretty fantastic.

The 2023 Oscar Nominees Are Here

The 95th Academy Award nominations are here…and that’s all I really have to say on the matter. Some of these are great and I agree with them. Others, as usual, are absolute head-scratchers. Make of this information what you will.

The 2022 Seattle Film Critics Society Award Nominations

seattle film critics society logo
Movies are pretty cool. A bold statement, I know. One of the perks (responsibilities that require additional work) of this job is that at the end of the year I get to shout out my favorite films by voting in a number of film critic groups. One that’s near and dear to my heart is the Seattle Film Critics Society in my hometown, and, wouldn’t you know it, we just announced our nominations.

'Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings' (2021) Movie Review

simu liu on a bus

On the surface, Shaun (Simu Liu) appears to drift through life, working a go-nowhere job and wasting time singing karaoke with his BFF Katy (Awkwafina). But Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a Marvel movie, so you know that’s all an illusion. Turns out, Shaun is really Shang-Chi, son of Wenwu (Tony Leung), a thousands-of-years-old crime lord and leader of the infamous Ten Rings gang. As one might expect, Shaun’s past comes a-calling and he must confront his own history as well as that of his family.

'Shang-Chi And The Legend Of Ten Rings' Trailer: Meet Marvel's Newest Badass

Marvel had big plans for 2020, as usual, but COVID-19 derailed most of those. While fans made due with their episodic Disney+ output, now that theaters are starting to open back up, prepare for the damn to burst. (The fourth quarter of 2021 is an insane glut of every big movie the pandemic delayed; it’s a bit overwhelming.) Though the release has been reshuffled a few times, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings arrives in September, and there’s this new trailer and poster to prove it.

Fantasia 2019: 'Master Z: Ip Man Legacy' Movie Review

This is an updated version of an earlier review.

This will surprise absolutely no one, but Yuen Woo-ping can stage the hell out of a fight. The guy is a legend for good reason. And he displays this particular skill front and center in his latest directorial effort, Master Z: Ip Man Legacy, which features choreography on par with some of his best. Inventive and thrilling, it runs the gamut from incredibly technical martial arts acumen to high-flying wire artistry that calls to mind his work on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Max Zhang, Michelle Yeoh, Dave Bautista, and Tony Jaa in a movie directed by Yuen Woo-ping? If that doesn’t move you to watch Master Z: Ip Man Legacy, you probably don’t like action movies. And if that’s the case, why are you here? I kid, I kid. But in all seriousness, if this trailer is any indication, Master Z is going to be a barn burner. Check it out.

So, the Daniels—Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert—the directorial duo behind the Harry Potter’s farting corpse movie, Swiss Army Man, have a new movie in the works. It sounds rad, may potentially star Crazy Rich Asians alums Michelle Yeoh and Awkwafina, and all is pretty cool with the world.

'Morgan' (2016) Movie Review

Luke Scott’s sci-fi/horror thriller Morgan is a frustrating watch. Admirable in it’s ambition, full of potentially interesting themes and ideas, with a fantastic cast and heady premise, there’s a great deal to ingest and appreciate. Which makes it maddening that the finished product face plants into tedium, the painful twist becomes obvious five minutes in, and it never capitalizes on what works in its favor.
