'Those Who Wish Me Dead' Trailer: Angelina Jolie Fights Fire And Assassins

After beginning his career as a bit-part actor, Taylor Sheridan made his name penning a string of bleak, neo-frontier, pseudo-westerns set in the modern age. Movie like Hell or High Water and Sicario. Jumping to the director’s chair, his output remains tonally and thematically similar thanks to the likes of Wind River. Judging by this trailer, his latest, an adaptation of Michael Kortya’s novel Those Who Wish Me Dead, trods familiar territory. But if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, and this looks like a movie we will be very, very into.

'Sicario: Day Of The Soldado' (2018) Movie Review

Denis Villeneuve’s 2015 drug war thriller Sicario is a crushing masterclass in tension, sparse landscapes full of violence, and grim realism. The follow-up, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, while filling a certain niche, feels very much like a facsimile. Gritty and low-down and dirty, it watches like one of those should-have-been DTV titles that magically gets a theatrical run because of name recognition. Think London Has Fallen or pretty much anything with Gerard Butler these days and you’re in the ball park. This comes with positives, but also drawbacks.

'Sicario 2: Soldado' Trailer Starts A War With Everyone

Do we really need a sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s 2015 cartel thriller Sicario? Especially one without the lead character or director from that film? Probably not. But that’s not going to stop Sicario 2: Soldado from happening, and thanks to this first trailer, I’m here for it’s DTV vibe and promise of excessive violence.

Beginning with the murder of a young woman on an isolated Wyoming Indian reservation, the story follows Cory Lambert (Jeremy Renner), a tracker grieving his own loss, as he helps Jane Banner (Elizabeth Olsen), a newbie FBI agent, stalk the killer. As he says early on, he “hunts predators.”
