'The Northman' (2022) Movie Review

I may not be as entirely in love with The Northman as many, though I do think it’s quite good. I am, however, definitely in love with the fact that after The Witch and The Lighthouse, which has budgets of approximately $5 and $11 million respectively, someone gave Robert Eggers a shit-ton of money (reportedly in the neighborhood of $90 million) to direct a bonkers-ass, borderline-hallucinatory Viking epic. And damn does he ever go for broke. It’s strange and esoteric and features both a White-Walker-looking Valkyrie with braces and Bjork playing a creepy no-eyed witch to provide a bit of context.

Around these parts, we’re big fans of Robert Eggers. When you go back to back with The Witch and The Lighthouse right out of the gate, we’re going to pay attention. And damn, the first trailer for his upcoming Viking vengeance tale, The Northman, does not disappoint. Check it out below.

'Aquaman' (2018) Movie Review

There’s so much going on in Aquaman I’m honestly not sure where to begin. Actually, that’s as good a place as any. There is a lot going on in Aquaman. Like, a lot. To try to map out the plot is a fool’s errand; it’s a tangle of betrayal, a reluctant hero, Aquaman’s childhood, a single throwaway line that connects to the larger DC movie universe, betrayal, revenge, destiny, heartbreak, and a litany of things I know I forgot. And director James Wan wraps all of this is a Day-Glo, candy-colored, hallucinogenic seascape that resembles the cover of an epic adventure metal album from the ‘80s. And it’s as fun and messy as that sounds.

'The Killing Of A Sacred Deer' (2017) Movie Review

Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster, Dogtooth) doesn’t make simple, straightforward movies. He doesn’t offer easy answers, or often even answers at all. His latest, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, doesn’t depart from this formula, but like his other films, it’s hypnotic, confrontational, and lingers long after exiting the theater.

If not the most interesting (read: weirdest) filmmaker working right now, Yorgos Lanthimos has to be near the top of the list, just between Dogtooth and 2015’s The Lobster. So his next offering, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, is obviously one of our most anticipated movies of the year. Especially as it’s been described as a revenge horror. And this first trailer only makes me with is was in my eyeballs right now.
