'Nosferatu' (2024) Movie Review

lily-rose depp looking out a window
There’s a great deal to admire in the latest rendition of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 horror classic (and unofficial Dracula adaptation) Nosferatu, the long-simmering passion project from Robert Eggers. It’s exquisitely mounted down to the most granular detail, features several fantastic, committed performances, and is stunning to look at. But for all there is to appreciate, it fails to move the needle or elicit much of any reaction beyond a shrug.

'Dead For A Dollar' (2022) Movie Review

Christoph waltz and prison bars
In the opening scene of Walter Hill’s new western, Dead for a Dollar, bounty hunter Max Borlund (Christoph Waltz) visits outlaw Joe Cribbens (Willem Dafoe) as he’s about to get out of jail, where Borlund put him. This sets the stage for a tale of hard, violent men on an inevitable collision course. And at no subsequent point does the film live up to the potential of this first moment.

'The Northman' (2022) Movie Review

Alexander Skarsgard with a wolf skin on his head.

I may not be as entirely in love with The Northman as many, though I do think it’s quite good. I am, however, definitely in love with the fact that after The Witch and The Lighthouse, which has budgets of approximately $5 and $11 million respectively, someone gave Robert Eggers a shit-ton of money (reportedly in the neighborhood of $90 million) to direct a bonkers-ass, borderline-hallucinatory Viking epic. And damn does he ever go for broke. It’s strange and esoteric and features both a White-Walker-looking Valkyrie with braces and Bjork playing a creepy no-eyed witch to provide a bit of context.

'The Northman' Trailer: Robert Eggers Returns With Vikings And Vengeance And Bjork

screaming angel demon
Around these parts, we’re big fans of Robert Eggers. When you go back to back with The Witch and The Lighthouse right out of the gate, we’re going to pay attention. And damn, the first trailer for his upcoming Viking vengeance tale, The Northman, does not disappoint. Check it out below.

'The Lighthouse' (2019) Movie Review

Where to begin with The Lighthouse? If you go in expecting the creeping Satanic dread of writer/director Robert Eggers last film, The Witch, you’ll be let down. That’s not to say there’s no creeping dread, because there’s plenty, it’s simply of a different sort. The film edges up to the supernatural, but is more concerned with what lurks inside, deep down, waiting to emerge. It’s also, as my notes taken during the screening attest, “weird as balls.” Somehow it works. I’m not always entirely certain how, but it does.

'The Lighthouse' Trailer: It's Robert Pattinson Vs. Willem Dafoe

Over the weekend, The Lighthouse, the latest from The Witch director Robert Eggers, played at the Toronto International Film Festival. I try to avoid early reactions for movies I’m excited about, like this one, and I don’t put much stock in the reactions I do see come out of film festivals. But this one appears to have broken some brains, and I count that as a win. To mark the occasion, A24 released a new trailer, and I’m still not sure what we’re about to witness.

'The Lighthouse' Trailer: Robert Pattinson And Willem Dafoe Get Creepy In Robert Eggers' Latest Horror

Robert Eggers’ The Witch (or The VVitch if you’re one of those) is one of the best horror movies, and best movies, of the decade. That was his first feature, so what do you do for a follow up when your debut was one of the most acclaimed films in recent memory? You apparently make a black and white, Lovecraftian tale about two olde timey lighthouse keepers. One of my most-anticipated movies of the year, The Lighthouse now has a trailer.

'Aquaman' (2018) Movie Review

There’s so much going on in Aquaman I’m honestly not sure where to begin. Actually, that’s as good a place as any. There is a lot going on in Aquaman. Like, a lot. To try to map out the plot is a fool’s errand; it’s a tangle of betrayal, a reluctant hero, Aquaman’s childhood, a single throwaway line that connects to the larger DC movie universe, betrayal, revenge, destiny, heartbreak, and a litany of things I know I forgot. And director James Wan wraps all of this is a Day-Glo, candy-colored, hallucinogenic seascape that resembles the cover of an epic adventure metal album from the ‘80s. And it’s as fun and messy as that sounds.

Robert Pattinson Almost Punched 'The Witch' Director On The Set Of Their Rad-Sounding New Movie

Yes, this story about Robert Pattinson almost punching The Witch director Robert Eggers on the set of their new movie, The Lighthouse, is the best thing I’ve read all day. And as the world descends into chaos around us (hopefully less so after the polls close), can’t we all use a good pick-me-up? And there are also details about The Lighthouse, which sounds rad.

'Murder On The Orient Express' (2017) Movie Review

This first paragraph has little to do with the movie we’ll be discussing today. We’ll get to that, but I have to get something off my chest first. Multiple times walking out of Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express, which, admittedly, isn’t great, I overheard people ask, “Have you heard of her before?” Her being AGATHA FUCKING CHRISTIE. Only the most celebrated mystery writer of all fucking time. Apologies, I needed to yell about that for a moment. I’m rage hyperventilating just thinking about it. Onward.

'The Florida Project' (2017) Movie Review

Tangerine director Sean Baker’s follow up, The Florida Project, takes a different track than its predecessor. Last time out, he shot on an iPhone and followed transgender prostitutes on Christmas Eve in Los Angeles. For his next trick, Baker and company shot on real 35mm film and the story revolves around a precocious six-year-old girl on summer break.

Sean Baker's 'The Florida Project' Trailer Is Full Of Magic And Wonder And Willem Dafoe

Sean Baker’s last film, Tangerine, is one of the best movies of 2015. (It’s also on my list of best movies of the 21st century so far.) Crushing and hopeful, and shot on an iPhone, the story of two transgender prostitutes trying to find a pimp on Christmas Eve is gorgeous and moving and should be required viewing. Based on nothing more than that, I’m all in on his follow up, The Florida Project. And A24 doesn’t often steer us wrong. And then it went and dropped this first trailer and I can’t even.

Netflix Passes A Creepy First Trailer For Adam Wingard's 'Death Note'

Cards on the table, I know nothing about Death Note. It’s apparently a super popular manga, which isn’t really my scene and explains why I know nothing about it. I do, however, know a thing or two about Adam Wingard, and those things are more than enough to get me excited for anything he’s involved with. (Even though Blair Witch was a total waste of time, The Guest and You’re Next suffice to bolster my enthusiasm.) Wingard’s Death Note adaptation hits Netflix later this year, and the streaming giant just dropped a first trailer.
