'The Batman' (2022) Movie Review

If Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight movies were a tad too upbeat, festive, short, and well-lit for you, don’t worry The Batman is here to rectify all that. Directed by Matt Reeves (Dawn and War for the Planet of the Apes), the latest tale of Gotham’s Caped Crusader is a lot of movie—in terms of runtime, in terms of storylines, in terms of plot, and brooding, and fistfights, and set pieces, and… Some of which works well, some of which never comes together in a satisfying way.

DC Fandome Trailers: The Batman, Wonder Woman 1984, The Suicide Squad, The Snyder Cut

Because every company gets their own convention, we got DC Fandome this weekend, which sounds a lot like Thunderdome, though I doubt DC/Warner Bros. made their fans fight to the death in a makeshift cage. Though I’m sure they would, they seem to be a dedicated bunch. Anyway, the studio dropped a bunch of new/first looks at various projects people are excited about, and because I’m too lazy to break them up, here they are all at once. Fans of the DC family of films certainly have quite a bit to look forward to coming in 2021. Enjoy.

Harley Quinn Is The One They Should Be Afraid Of In The First 'Birds Of Prey' Trailer

Suicide Squad may have been a mess, with a million cuts and major studio interference, but one thing was clear, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn was a breakout character. If there’s anything worth watching in that movie, it’s her. And now she’s back, and she’s bringing some friends. Check out the first trailer for Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of Harley Quinn. Yes, that’s the full title, but we’ll just call it Birds of Prey because we’re not masochists.

'Shazam!' (2019) Movie Review

Shazam! aims to say something about staying true to yourself, finding family where you can, and that you don’t need superpowers to be a hero and do extraordinary things, all wrapped in superhero origin story trappings. Those aims are all well and good, but the finished product is so saccharine and hollow, the emotion so manufactured and false, and the goofiness wears so thin so fast, it becomes insufferable and leaves a lingering bad taste.

The First 'Joker' Trailer Puts On A Happy Face

The old adage goes, there’s a fine line between comedy and tragedy, that the difference is a matter of perspective. And from what we see in the first trailer for Todd Phillips’ Joaquin Phoenix-starring Joker, that appears to be the underlying conceit for the origin story of the Clown Prince of Crime. The first trailer dropped this morning, and this certainly doesn’t feel like your typical comic book movie. Watch it below.

'Aquaman' (2018) Movie Review

There’s so much going on in Aquaman I’m honestly not sure where to begin. Actually, that’s as good a place as any. There is a lot going on in Aquaman. Like, a lot. To try to map out the plot is a fool’s errand; it’s a tangle of betrayal, a reluctant hero, Aquaman’s childhood, a single throwaway line that connects to the larger DC movie universe, betrayal, revenge, destiny, heartbreak, and a litany of things I know I forgot. And director James Wan wraps all of this is a Day-Glo, candy-colored, hallucinogenic seascape that resembles the cover of an epic adventure metal album from the ‘80s. And it’s as fun and messy as that sounds.

'Justice League' (2017) Movie Review

Justice League is clunky and messy. It’s jumbled and misshapen. The presence of multiple directors—Zack Snyder did the bulk of the heavy lifting, though Joss Whedon handled extensive reshoots and rewrites, and roughly 20% of the finished film belongs to him, according to reports—is readily apparent in the mishmash of tones and the fact that it watches like multiple movies shoehorned together. Cringe-worthy choices abound. The fight scenes all look like they’re lifted from a video game promo. And, of course, since this is a superhero movie, the plot revolves around an iconic group of comic book characters searching for CGI boxes powerful enough to destroy the world. But for all the bumps and bruises and problems, and they are legion, Justice League is a hell of a lot of fun.

'Wonder Woman' (2017) Movie Review

Here’s the bad news: Wonder Woman is a flawed superhero origin story. Now that we have that out of the way, the good news is that it’s mostly awesome, finally brings one of the greatest comic book characters ever to the big screen after more than 75 years, breaks up just a little bit of the boys’ club that is contemporary superhero movies, and is easily the best thing the DC Extended Universe has produced thus far.

'Suicide Squad' (2016) Movie Review

Like the mismatched cadre of super villains of the title, writer/director David Ayer’s Suicide Squad is chaotic and frantic and all over the place. At times this fractured nature can be propulsive and even invigorating. Other times—too often—this means the film is a messy jumble, awkwardly paced, and sorely lacks focus or depth. It’s a mess. An occasionally interesting mess, one not entirely without promise, but still a mess.

Okay, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was something of a letdown—I didn’t hate it like many, but it wasn’t great. But that doesn’t mean I’ve given up on the DC Extended Universe just yet. I have hope for Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and that solo Batman joint they might give Ben Affleck. Oh yeah, and there’s Suicide Squad, which looks like a complete and total blast (something BvS most certainly is not). Here's Your First Look At The 'Batman: The Killing Joke' Animated Movie

Along with Frank Miller’s work on comics like Batman: Year One and The Dark Knight Returns, Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s Batman: The Killing Joke is perhaps the most influential story on the Caped Crusader’s modern iteration—it helped define the character as we currently know him. The 1988 one-off graphic novel is dark and disturbing and the ramifications are still felt today. There has been talk of adapting it before, but an animated version is on the way, and now we have our first look in the form of a teaser and new featurette. Start getting psyched.

'Batman V Superman' Already Released A Deleted Scene

You probably already know this, but Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is getting an R-rated Blu-ray release that will be 30 minutes longer than the already 151-minute theatrical cut. This may hit in June, but even though the movie has only been out for a weekend at this point, there’s already a deleted scene available online. Check it out below.

'Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice' (2016) Movie Review

There are a number of elements in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice that I think are great, and that fill me with hope for the future of the burgeoning the DC Extended Universe. Which makes it that much more frustrating that the latest superhero throwdown is such a jumbled misfire, such a bloated, tedious slog, that it’s ultimately just not good. Maybe it’s time that we, as a people, stop letting Zack Snyder do things.

Our first look at DC’s supervillain team up SuicideSquad was something of an accident. The footage shown at San Diego Comic Con leaked out online and eventually DC and Warner Bros. simply released an HD version out of frustration because people kept watching the janky video.
