During production, Nicolas Cage said Japanese director Sion Sono’s Prisoners of the Ghostland “might be the wildest movie I’ve ever made.” Which is saying something from a man who once made a movie where he wore John Travolta’s face. Then again, he’s not wrong. Face/Off, however off-the wall, doesn’t have the testicular explosions, irradiated mutant ghosts, and the ubiquitous cracked mannequin masks of Prisoners. The final product is something like a hyper-absurd post-apocalyptic Escape From New York riff. And I’m here for every last second.

Nicolas Cage Says Sion Sono's 'Prisoners Of The Ghostland' "Might Be The Wildest Movie I've Ever Made"
Nicolas Cage is a madman who has made some wild movies. Last year he battled cultish demon bikers (Mandy), smashed a pool table with a sledgehammer while screaming “The Hokey Pokey” (Mom and Dad), and played a trucker who’s girlfriend’s daughter is possessed by the spirit of his dead wife (Between Worlds). And that was just 2018. But the Academy Award-winning actor recently said his upcoming team up with fellow cinematic lunatic, Sion Sono (Tag), Prisoners of the Ghostland, the craziest movie he’s ever made, and that’s music to my ears.

Lunatics Sion Sono And Nicolas Cage Team Up For Cinematic Mayhem With 'Prisoners Of The Ghostland'
When two cinematic madmen hook up, you can bet the result is
going to be some crazy ass shit. And that’s exactly what I expect from the tag
team of Sion Sono and Nicolas Cage. If the prospect of these to lunatics
working together doesn’t get your Spidey sense tingling, you may be dead. The
duo is set to work together on Prisoners of the Ghostland, Sono’s
English-language debut, and it sounds rad and insane.

SIFF 2016: 'Tag' (2015) Movie Review
Under normal circumstances, a river full of school girl
corpses, ones that have been cut in half no less, shouldn’t be funny. But when
this scenario is in the hands of manic madman Sion Sono, as it is in his latest
wingnut opus, Tag, it certainly elicits a chuckle, even if
it’s an uncomfortable one.

Check Out This Trailer For Sion Sono's 'Shinjuku Swan,' It's As Nuts As You Hoped
Sion Sono is a busy, busy guy. Why Don’t You Play
in Hell made the festival rounds last year, Tokyo
Tribe premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival,
and he apparently has six, yes, six, movies due out this
year. This includes Shinjuku Swan, which just dropped this
new trailer that is totally in the wheelhouse of the maverick Japanese
director.
