The 2018 Academy Award Nominations Have Arrived

It’s that time of year, the 2018 Academy Award nominations have arrived. Do with this information what you will. Commence bickering about who should win what, who was snubbed, what film is overrated, and so on and so forth.

I watch the Oscars, but that’s as much attention as I give them. I agree with some of these choices; I disagree wholeheartedly with others. But in the end, I don’t really care, the Academy Awards don’t really relate to me and my tastes. While some of my favorites appear on this list, most of what really blew me away in the past year is conspicuously absent. Then again, I've vote for two different awards, and I've seen how this process goes firsthand.

There are a few nice surprises, like Get Out with four noms. (I’ve loved Daniel Kaluuya since The Fades!) Rachel Morrison makes history by being the first woman to be nominated for Cinematography for Mudbound. Only one omission that bums me out, which is The Florida Project for Best Picture. Vicky Krieps should have a nom for acting circles around DDL in Phantom Thread, though so does Leslie Manville, so good on her. I admit to being a bit startled by the lack of Spielberg in Best Director—I just expect Uncle Steve to always be in the the picture. Don’t worry, there will be plenty of righteous outrage on the internet over the sheer injustice of these nominations, even though there’s nothing terribly shocking to see.

That said, the nominees are:
