'Okja' Trailer: Meet Bong Joon-Ho's Netflix Creature Feature

All South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho does is kick out the jams, cinematically speaking that is. And you better believe the idea of The Host director telling the tender story about a young girl and her best friend, a giant genetically altered pig monster, has my full and undivided attention. Netflix just dropped the first trailer for Okja.

SIFF '13 Review: 'Furever'

Our pets are full-fledged members of the family. For many of us, they’re as close to children as we ever plan to have. We watch them do all manner of stupidly cute things, occasionally dress them up in demeaning holiday costumes, and share our entire lives with them. We know going in that, odds are, we’re going to outlive any domesticated animal we bring into our home, but we push this to the periphery and ignore it like we ignore death as whole.

'Oblivion' Movie Review

All style, no substance is the refrain that ran through my head watching writer/director Joseph Kosinski’s latest film, Oblivion. This is also the precise sentiment created by his previous film, Tron: Legacy. Though the Tom Cruise-starring science fiction adventure is breathtaking to look at, there is nothing to the film aside from the visuals. Bland, predictable, and frankly boring, Oblivion is an empty stylistic exercise, and feels like a slick bit of advertising, not a movie.

Blu-Ray Review: 'Battlestar Galactica: Blood And Chrome'

Because every beloved franchise, film, or television show apparently needs an update, a reboot, a reimagining, or another version of a fresh start, we give you Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome. A prequel to Syfy’s BSG remake, Blood and Chrome began life as a concept for a videogame. The idea was deemed too good for a game, and a series was commissioned. Originally premiering as webisodes, the ten original episodes have now been strung together into a single feature on the unrated Blu-ray spectacular. While it doesn’t break any new ground, Blood and Chrome makes for a decently entertaining watch.

TV Review: 'The Walking Dead'-3.14-"Prey"

Last week’s episode of AMC’s The Walking Dead, “Arrow on the Doorpost,” has been almost universally recognized as a total piece of shit. In a show that has often been criticized for nothing happening, it was by far the most egregious offender. The hope of most of us who watch the wildly popular zombie drama was that the follow-up, “Prey,” would right the ship. Any progress would be a step in the right direction. Were they successful? TV Review: 'The Walking Dead'-3.10-"Home"

 

Last week’s episode of AMC’s The Walking Dead…well, let’s just say I had some serious issues with it. The first episode of the second half of the third season, it felt like “The Suicide King” took every issue I have with the show and built an entire episode around them. Up to that point, season three had been my favorite of the series, so it was extra disappointing.

TV Review: 'The Walking Dead'-3.09-"The Suicide King"

Through the midseason finale, “Made to Suffer,” season three of AMC’s massive zombie series The Walking Dead has been surprisingly solid. The action, drama, and actual tension of the first eight episodes have alleviated many of the lingering issues that have dogged the highly rated show. By no means is it perfect, but it found a nice groove, and was inching closer and closer to matching the potential inherent in the comic book the series it’s based on.

Fringe's Finest Hours: Brent's Favorite Episodes Of Fox's Sci-Fi Procedural

Fringe may be dead and gone, but thanks to syndication on the Science Channel, not to mention the magic of a home releases, you’ll have ample opportunities to watch and re-watch your favorite Fringe cases. This is a show that really benefits from the ability to watch in a marathon format. As you move through the series and each episode becomes more and more connected to those that came before, and those that come after, it’s nice to view them one after another for continuity’s sake.

It's Going To Be A Good Year: Brent's Ten Most Anticipated Science Fiction Movies Of 2013

Now that we’ve got that pesky 2012 out of the way, we can turn our attention to the year ahead of us. 2013 still seems sparkly and new, there are no dings or scratches, and the possibilities are positively intoxicating. From all appearances, the next 12 months should be a pretty good time to be a fan of science fiction movies. We’ve got high-profile sequels on the way, a couple of long-awaited follow-ups to phenomenal debuts, and a whole mess of exciting films to see in the theaters. Some will be kick ass actioners, while others bring big ideas, themes, and thinkin’ to the genre.

With all of that in mind, here are the ten movies I’m most looking forward to.
