I don’t know what movie is the one that’s going to get me back into a theater despite the global pandemic. But after this trailer for Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune, we have a new contender. Just watch.

'Sicario: Day Of The Soldado' (2018) Movie Review

Denis Villeneuve’s 2015 drug war thriller Sicario is a crushing masterclass in tension, sparse landscapes full of violence, and grim realism. The follow-up, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, while filling a certain niche, feels very much like a facsimile. Gritty and low-down and dirty, it watches like one of those should-have-been DTV titles that magically gets a theatrical run because of name recognition. Think London Has Fallen or pretty much anything with Gerard Butler these days and you’re in the ball park. This comes with positives, but also drawbacks.

'Deadpool 2' Trailer Has Poop Jokes And X-Force

I legitimately enjoyed Deadpool, more than I expected to. I wasn’t sure how it would translate, if they would go all in on the filth and violence, but they did. And the result is a fun, foul-mouthed superhero joint. Even so, I haven’t been able to work up one iota of enthusiasm for Deadpool 2. And I should. David Leitch directed John Wick, the best modern action movie, and Atomic Blonde, which is solid. It has Josh Brolin, who I’ve loved since Thrashin’; Zazie Beetz, who rules; Terry Crews; and the kid from Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Regardless of how I feel, the Merc with the Mouth is coming back, and there’s a new trailer, and it does little to get my juices flowing.

'Sicario 2: Soldado' Trailer Starts A War With Everyone

Do we really need a sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s 2015 cartel thriller Sicario? Especially one without the lead character or director from that film? Probably not. But that’s not going to stop Sicario 2: Soldado from happening, and thanks to this first trailer, I’m here for it’s DTV vibe and promise of excessive violence.

Not content with being a huge star, aging more gracefully than any human ever to live, and selling his tequila brand for a billion dollars, George Clooney continues to make the rest of us mere mortals look like turds by directing movies. His latest, the Coen Brothers-scripted Suburbicon is one we’ve been keeping an eye on. The first trailer just dropped and it’s pretty much what you expect, and I mean that in a good way. Any time Joel and Ethan Coen make a movie, it’s going to be an event that captures my attention, and such is case with Hail, Caesar!. A bouncy, energetic dalliance into the Hollywood studio system of the 1950s, this is a well-meaning romp full of whip-cracking dialogue that only the Coens can pull off, homages to the classic genres of yesteryear, and quirky characters that would become stilted in the hands of any other filmmakers.

Blu-Ray/DVD Review: 'Thrashin'

Denis Villenueve’s (Prisoners) Sicario is one we’re definitely stoked for, and it was just announced that it will make it’s North American debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in early September (yet another year I wish I was going to TIFF). 'Oldboy' Movie Review

In 2003, Park Chan-wook’s revenge thriller Oldboy made audiences squirm in their seats, and Spike Lee’s new remake, despite some issues, is going to elicit a similar reaction. While the grim plot and overriding themes are note for note the same, Lee, screenwriter Mark Protosevic (I Am Legend), and a fantastic cast, do enough to differentiate their film, and keep it from being a tired rehash.

'Oldboy' Redband Trailer Says It's Hammer Time

I’m torn, so very, very torn. On one hand, the fact that Hollywood is remaking a badass modern revenge classic like Park Chan-wook’s  “Oldboy,” which is barely a decade old, is a travesty. They’re going to water it down, take away all of the bite, give it a happy, Americanized ending. You get where this train is headed. On the other hand, this new redband trailer for Spike Lee’s version of “Oldboy” is really good.
