'Crimes Of The Future' Trailer: David Cronenberg Gets Back To His Body Horror Roots

Add the name Cronenberg to any movie and you have our undivided attention. Especially when it’s familial patriarch David Cronenberg. And especially especially when the film in question turns out to be a sci-fi-twinged body-horror romp. Such is the case with this first teaser trailer for his latest outing, Crimes of the Future. Check it out below, it has all the uncomfortable squeamishness one could hope for.

Awards season seriously feels like it runs half the year. It’s not quite that long, but beginning in early (and earlier every year) December and, at least the last couple years, wrapping up with the Oscars in March, it’s not short. 

'Underwater' (2020) Movie Review

Deep sea creature features tend to take a lot of guff for trying to be Alien but wet. I, for one, have zero problem with that. Space is hazardous, and the deepest reaches of our terrestrial oceans are equally harrowing in many of the same ways. So if movies like Leviathan and Deep Star Six (people often throw in The Abyss to concoct a trilogy, but James Cameron’s movie is in a whole other stratosphere) want to make shitty Alien-at-the-bottom-of-the-sea riffs, I am here for that. Director William Eubank’s Underwater definitely falls into this category, and it’s precisely as shitty and awesome as I wanted it to be.

'Personal Shopper' (2016) Movie Review

Maybe the most impressive thing about Olivier Assayas’ Personal Shopper is that like half the movie takes place via text message and it didn’t annoy the living shit out of me. Seriously, we probably spend more time reading words on Kristen Stewart’s cell phone, as her character communicates with an unknown stalker, than we do listening to her speak. Yet somehow the result is tense and atmospheric instead of straight up obnoxious.

'American Ultra' Movie Review

Under normal circumstances, I hate calling a movie an interesting failure, but in the case of director Nima Nourizadeh’s American Ultra, that’s the most apt description I can conjure. There’s a kernel of a clever idea here, as well as a few bits worth closer examination, but it feels like its stoner protagonist wrote the movie, and continually misses opportunities to satirize and the sleeper agent spy films like the Bourne franchise, like it obviously wants, and develop into anything more than a string of scenes someone thought would be awesome.

'Snow White and the Huntsman' Movie Review

In this day and age it is unusual, to say the least, for a filmmaker not to allow the protagonist in a movie to speak, but that’s the case with first-time director Rupert Sanders’ “Snow White and the Huntsman”. Kristen Stewart plays the beloved fairy tale princess, but barely says a word.  Almost everything you learn about the character, which admittedly isn’t much, other people tell you. You constantly hear about how good and pure and innocent she is, but you never see her embody these qualities. The same goes for her beauty. That dead horse is beaten into the ground, but you’re never allowed to sit back, gather information, and decide for yourself.
