'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga' (2024) Movie Review

“Do you have it in you to make it epic?” one character asks another near the end of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. In answer to his own question, George Miller casually strolls over, taps the mic, leans in, and responds, “Yes, yes I do.” The 79-year-old action maestro has once again stepped up to show the whippersnappers exactly how to do it. And it is good.

'Thor: Love And Thunder' (2022) Movie Review

Do you have one of those friends who tells a joke, and when you don’t laugh, they proceed to poke you in the ribs, like, “Huh, right, get it? Get it?” If you know this person, or have seen countless iterations of them on TV and in movies, that’s the general sensation of watching Thor: Love and Thunder, the latest in Marvel’s candy-colored, Norse-mythology-inspired arm of their cinematic universe. The entire film, and by extension director Taika Waititi, feels like it’s just going to stare at you awkwardly until you force a weak chuckle then it will bask in the glory of its own wit.

He cut his teeth coordinating fights for tons of movies, most notably as of late, the likes of Captain America: Winter Soldier, Thor: Ragnarok, and Atomic Blonde, among others. 'Avengers: Endgame' (2019) Movie Review

With Avengers: Endgame, Marvel manages to both take their expansive, episodic superhero saga in a direction I did not see coming, but also plays it out in entirely predictable, familiar fashion. At three hours, this movie is a lot, and it falls into some of the typical MCU pitfalls, but overall, it’s a blast, serves as an end point but also a beginning, and will more than satisfy fans who have devoted ten plus years and 20 plus chapters to these tales. At this point, Marvel knows their fans and what they want, and there’s going to be plenty of tears and cheers in the audience.

Now that you’ve all seen Captain Marvel—at least according to the numbers, statistically speaking, most of you have, unless you’re a butthurt manbaby who’s upset Marvel invited girls to play, too—it’s high time to turn our attention to the next installment of the episodic saga that is the MCU: Avengers: Endgame. 'Bad Times At The El Royale' (2018) Movie Review

Following the groundbreaking success of Pulp Fiction came a wave of lesser films attempting to replicate that formula. Crime sagas with layered timelines, interlocking narratives, and eccentric characters were everywhere. With few exceptions, most of these endeavors fell flat. Bad Times at the El Royale, the latest from Cabin in the Woods director Drew Goddard, could easily be one of these movies.

'Avengers: Infinity War' (2018) Movie Review

I have to give it to Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel decided to stop fucking around. One of the biggest criticisms of their expansive cinematic universe is that no one ever in any real danger and no one of significance ever truly dies. Well, the bodies start dropping a few minutes in and continue throughout. Some are relatively minor in the grand scheme, and not all of them are destined to remain corpses, but quite a few are permanent and substantial game changers. With that, more than any other Marvel movie in their ten-year history, this film carries a legitimate edge of peril most don’t have. Right away, they establish a scenario where death, for anyone, is a real possibility, and the film’s better for it.

'Thor: Ragnarok' Trailer: Chris Hemsworth Meets A Friend From Work

Marvel movies have a reputation for being overly same-y, and it’s a reputation well earned. Hell, just look back at their last movie, Doctor Strange, which, visual flourishes aside, is basically Iron Man with a dose of mysticism thrown in. We can get into exceptions (Guardians of the Galaxy) and what not, but that’s been done to death and I don’t really care. What I do care about, however, is this new Thor: Ragnarok trailer. Not only does it look like a different kind of artifact, it’s the most fun Marvel has had maybe ever.

Movie Review: 'In The Heart Of The Sea,' AKA Thor And Spider-Man Fight A Whale

If you’ve ever wanted to watch Thor and Spider-Man battle a giant, angry whale, Ron Howard’s In the Heart of the Sea is as close as you’re going to get. The movie stars Chris Hemsworth and Tom Holland—the God of Thunder and Web-Slinger from Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, respectively—as olde timey New England Whalers, and in reality it isn’t so much them fighting a pissed off whale is it is them routinely getting thrashed by one.

It’s difficult to find an opponent worthy of battling Thor, he is, after all, a god. But a giant whale may just do the trick, and that’s what you get in the first trailer for Ron Howard’s In the Heart of the Sea.

'Avengers: Age Of Ultron' Movie Review

This has been said elsewhere, but the impressive thing about Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron is how writer/director Joss Whedon takes a story that is absolutely packed with superheroes and stories and action, and never lets it get weighed down. This could have easily devolved into a rambling, incoherent, 141-minute long mess, but Whedon is able give each of these notable characters their moment to shine and imbue them with legitimate emotional weight. It’s a delicate juggling act in the midst of nearly nonstop action, and is a huge reason why Age of Ultron is another in a long line of massive, exciting, fun movies from the comic book studio.

'Blackhat' Movie Review: Michael Mann's Cyberthriller Is A Jumbled Misfire

With the massive Sony infiltration at the end of last year, and the subsequent threats of violence at screenings of The Interview, hacking is a big topic of conversation at the moment, one that is at the forefront of the public consciousness. Which makes the release of Michael Mann’s hacker thriller Blackhat seem incredibly fortuitous, as the action follows a team of Chinese and American agents as they track a mysterious cyber outlaw with destructive tendencies across the globe. Unfortunately for audiences, the movie is a dull, drab affair that, while occasionally slick, with a few moments of nice tension, carries little more than that to recommend it.

'Thor: The Dark World' Movie Review

More than most films in the Marvel cinematic universe, Thor straddles the line between science fiction and fantasy. With movies like Iron Man and Captain America, and characters like the Hulk, science has always kept the films tethered to the real world. Thor, and especially the latest installment, Thor: The Dark World, allows for a certain broadening of horizons, bringing in magic and mythology, while still keeping a distinct sci-fi edge.

'Red Dawn' Movie Review

In the spirit of honesty, I’m a little bit ashamed about what I’m about to write, but here it goes. I like “Red Dawn”. And just to be clear, we’re talking about the unnecessary remake, not the 1984 John Milius original. As a fast-paced, low-brain-cell action flick, it turns out that “Red Dawn” is a lot of fun. As a movie with all of the trappings and trimmings of such a thing, it isn’t quite so successful. There isn’t much in the way of set up, or any of the elements that go into a traditional narrative. Here are a handful of people—I hesitate to call them characters. Most of them have names. Hey look, some ambiguous evil bad guys are parachuting out of the sky. Go!

'Snow White and the Huntsman' Movie Review

In this day and age it is unusual, to say the least, for a filmmaker not to allow the protagonist in a movie to speak, but that’s the case with first-time director Rupert Sanders’ “Snow White and the Huntsman”. Kristen Stewart plays the beloved fairy tale princess, but barely says a word.  Almost everything you learn about the character, which admittedly isn’t much, other people tell you. You constantly hear about how good and pure and innocent she is, but you never see her embody these qualities. The same goes for her beauty. That dead horse is beaten into the ground, but you’re never allowed to sit back, gather information, and decide for yourself.
