The 2022 Oscar Winners

So, the Oscars were last night. That happened. As usual, I like some of the choices, hate others, and haven’t seen most of the movie if I’m being honest. I’m sure they’re lovely and as good as people say, but year by year, decreasing exponentially, I find I have less and less interest in the Academy Awards. I’m not trying to sound cool, but there are thousands of other movies I’d rather watch. That’s all.

I’m an inveterate Bad Boys 2 stan. I maintain it’s the most quintessentially American movie ever made, for good and ill. That said, I’m rather ambivalent about the upcoming third chapter, Bad Boys for Life. I mean, I’m going to watch the living hell out of it, that much should be obvious, but I have little faith that the core duo’s banter has aged well. Anyway, there’s a new trailer full of quips and explosions and bang bangs and a familiar tune. Take a gander below.

'Gemini Man' (2019) Movie Review

It’s going to be weird to talk about Gemini Man, Ang Lee’s new Old-Will-Smith-versus-Young-Will-Smith action movie. Not because of the plot or acting or story or any of the usual suspects—though there is, as always, much to discus in those arenas—but because of the technology used to make it. By its very nature, this is going to create multiple different viewing experiences, even more so than the usual 3D, IMAX, etc. format choices, and potentially have more of an impact.

'Bad Boys For Life' Trailer: Will Smith And Martin Lawrence Ride Again

If you’re familiar with this website, you know I’m of the mind that Michael Bay’s Bad Boys II is the most quintessentially American movie ever made. The scene where Will Smith and Martin Lawrence drive a bright yellow Hummer through a Cuban slum—as in, through buildings—with zero regard for human life, after invading a sovereign foreign nation of their own accord, distills it all in such pure fashion. But anyway, I digress. Bad Boys For Life, the third chapter in the saga, picks up the duo 16 years later and, at least from this first trailer, they appear to be up to their old tricks again.

'Suicide Squad' (2016) Movie Review

Like the mismatched cadre of super villains of the title, writer/director David Ayer’s Suicide Squad is chaotic and frantic and all over the place. At times this fractured nature can be propulsive and even invigorating. Other times—too often—this means the film is a messy jumble, awkwardly paced, and sorely lacks focus or depth. It’s a mess. An occasionally interesting mess, one not entirely without promise, but still a mess.

Okay, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was something of a letdown—I didn’t hate it like many, but it wasn’t great. But that doesn’t mean I’ve given up on the DC Extended Universe just yet. I have hope for Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and that solo Batman joint they might give Ben Affleck. Oh yeah, and there’s Suicide Squad, which looks like a complete and total blast (something BvS most certainly is not). Comic-Con is the gift that keeps on giving. We saw the new Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer, that Star Wars: The Force Awakens reel, and Deadpool footage, all of which looks rad. (The X-Men: Apocalypse stuff hasn’t been unveiled online just yet, but we’re waiting.) But now the first look at David Ayer’s Suicide Squad just hit the web, and it is fucking awesome.

'After Earth' Movie Review

You have to hand it to M. Night Shyamalan. For a filmmaker most known for forcing unearned, out-of-left field—some may say asinine—twists into every movie at inopportune moments, he certainly resisted that urge with his new sci-fi adventure After Earth. It couldn't have been easy for him, and there are times in the film when you, and the entire audience, wait for that holy-shit-it-was-all-a-dream moment, a moment that thankfully never materializes. There are a few groaners, but the closest thing to a twist is nothing more than a poor decision in the writing process that bestows way too much empathetic power on a giant bird.

'Men In Black 3' Movie Review

Watching “Men In Black 3” you’ll notice some things that feel familiar. It is the same aesthetic, the same music, the same sense of humor, and the same chemistry between characters as in the first two movies. That isn’t to say it’s bad, in fact “MIB 3” is moderately entertaining throughout, but it is the exact same formula, and you can’t escape a feeling of redundancy. The first “Men In Black” movie is a fun little sci-fi comedy, but the second, while enjoyable enough, is more of the same. And the third installment is even more, more of the same. “Men In Black 3” is one of those movies that you can watch and never have to think about again.
