'The Fate Of The Furious' Trailer: Say It Ain't So, Vin Diesel

Between Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto turning his back on his makeshift family, Charlize Theron’s terrible, terrible pseudo-dreadlocks (is she going to a rave?), and a goddamn submarine bursting through the icepack and getting into a high-speed chase with a Lamborghini and a tank, I have no clue what’s going on in the first trailer for The Fate of the Furious, the latest in the Fast and Furious franchise. But holy hell, whatever it is, I love the shit out of it.

As is plainly obvious by the hashtag at the end of thistrailer, it’s only a matter of time before The Fate of the Furious becomes stylized at The F8 of the Furious, which fits in just fine with the franchise’s overall aesthetic.

While each chapter has grown increasingly bananas over time, The Fate of the Furious looks to take this to whole new levels. Again. We thought Dom and Brian jumping a car from skyscraper to skyscraper in Dubai was ridiculous, but this shit is straight-up bonkers.

I do really enjoy the absurdity of a group of Los Angeles street racers morphing into a cadre of elite international super spies. And I can’t wait to see what hot-rod-based mayhem the crew comes up with this time. All bets are off and FF is out to hit maniac highs.

From what we see in this trailer, it really does run the gamut, from the streets of New York City to barren ice fields—and it wouldn’t be a Fast and Furious movie without at least one street racing scene full of close-up butt shots.

Primarily a delivery system for over-the-top action set pieces, here’s the official plot synopsis for The Fate of the Furious if you’re into such things:
Now that Dom and Letty are on their honeymoon and Brian and Mia have retired from the game—and the rest of the crew has been exonerated—the globetrotting team has found a semblance of a normal life. But when a mysterious woman (Oscar winner Charlize Theron) seduces Dom into the world of crime he can’t seem to escape and a betrayal of those closest to him, they will face trials that will test them as never before.
From the shores of Cuba and the streets of New York City to the icy plains off the arctic Barents Sea, our elite force will crisscross the globe to stop an anarchist from unleashing chaos on the world’s stage…and to bring home the man who made them a family.
The biggest question is, of course, what could possible make Dom turn on his family? But we have to wait a few months to find that out. You just know it has to be something significant, like he somehow thinks he’s protecting them, or this is going to be an all-time heel turn.

In addition to Vin Diesel, The Fate of the Furious features a slew of familiar faces, including Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyreese Gibson, Jason Statham, Ludacris, Nathalie Emmanuel, Elsa Pataky, and Kurt Russell. Charlize Theron headlines the list of newcomers that also includes Scott Eastwood and Helen Mirren—yeah, the most diverse franchise in Hollywood now has a legitimate Dame, which is awesome—as well as Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray.

The Fate of the Furious roars into theaters on April 14, 2017.
