'Cats' (2019) Movie Review

Andrew Lloyd Weber’s musical Cats is well known for being weird-ass nonsense. Now imagine taking that weird-ass nonsense from the stage, using hundreds of millions of dollars to digitally turn well-known actors into hellish feline-mutant-people, then splashing the result across a movie screen. I’m not sure what the hell I just saw, but I definitely know I wasn’t high enough for whatever it was.

'Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw' (2019) Movie Review

Since Fast Five (give or take), the Fast & Furious franchise has become a continual escalation of ludicrous, physics-defying mayhem. Pushing the boundaries of imagination, logic, and audiences’ willingness to suspend disbelief, the films have left behind the grounded, Point-Break-with-cars style action of the early days in favor of sheer ridiculousness. Looking back, it almost feels inevitable that spinoff, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, a movie as bloated as that title and star Dwayne Johnson’s biceps, was destined to become an absurd action cartoon.

At this point, I don’t need a trailer to know I want to see Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. But that doesn’t mean this latest, and “final,” trailer doesn’t make me smile like a drooling idiot. Because it does. This is ridiculous, and I mean that as the highest praise. I didn’t stop grinning the whole time. Check it out below.

As the synopsis points out right out of the gate, from humble beginnings as a Point Break rip off, the Fast and Furious films have “amassed almost $5 billion worldwide” over the course of eight movies. Which is why Hobbs & Shaw, sorry, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw, exists in the first place, to put two popular secondary characters (and one notorious Vin Diesel beefer) together in one film and squeeze more cash from this particular stone. And I’m here for it. Watch the first trailer below and tell me you’re not, too.

'Molly's Game' (2017) Movie Review

As a writer, Aaron Sorkin has an ability to make me care about topics I don’t usually give two shits about. I’m not particularly interested in the d-bags who created Facebook, but The Social Network makes that story as compelling as it’s going to get. The same goes for Steve Jobs (Steve Jobs), Sabermetrics (Moneyball), and Tom Cruise as a lawyer (A Few Good Men). His directorial debut, Molly’s Game, for which he also wrote the script, follows a familiar pattern.

'Star Trek Beyond' (2016) Movie Review

So, I finally saw Star Trek Beyond this weekend (just a wee bit late, I know). While I’m too lazy to write a real review—and who the hell cares this far after the fact—it’s a damn fine time. Not the best movie of the summer by far, it’s still in the upper echelon as far as big-budget studio blockbusters go—though that’s admittedly not the highest bar this year.

Idris Elba Is Going To Kick Everyone In The Face On TV

Idris Elba is a total badass. For all the talk, I hope he doesn’t become the next James Bond, not because I give two shits what color a fictional spy’s skin is, but because I want him to keep doing other awesome stuff and not be tied to one character for years at a time (he’s already on the Dark Tower chain). Awesome stuff like a new documentary series where he’s going to train to be a professional fighter and actually climb in the ring.

'Star Trek Beyond': Watch Everyone Be Sad In The Final Trailer

We’re just a few weeks away from Star Trek Beyond, which feels strange to say as there’s been a noticeable lack of hype surrounding the film—at least aside from the backlash stirred up by the first trailer. Maybe Paramount is still shell-shocked by the hatred for Star Trek Into Darkness (which, despite its reputation for being critically panned, has an 86% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes). But there is a new “final” trailer to check out, and it’s a total downer.

Movie Review: 'Zootopia'

Disney Animation’s Zootopia is a gorgeous, brightly colored visual spectacle; a sweet, moving tale of friendship and acceptance; a shadowy, noir-style crime story; and some of the greatest on-screen world building in recent memory. Oh yeah, it’s also a sharp, pointed, timely indictment of systemic racism and deeply ingrained, largely unspoken intolerance in our society. All told through adorable, relatable, anthropomorphic animals wearing clothes and acting, at times, uncomfortably human. There is so much more going on here than just another “cute” animated feature—cute is also something of a racial slur in the world of Zootopia.
