'Jungle Cruise' (2021) Movie Review

One thing I did not expect was for Disney’s Jungle Cruise, their latest cinematic adaptation of one of a classic theme park rides, to begin with an orchestral arrangement of a Metallica song. But here were are, though that’s as edgy as this movie ever gets.

Since Fast Five (give or take), the Fast & Furious franchise has become a continual escalation of ludicrous, physics-defying mayhem. Pushing the boundaries of imagination, logic, and audiences’ willingness to suspend disbelief, the films have left behind the grounded, Point-Break-with-cars style action of the early days in favor of sheer ridiculousness. Looking back, it almost feels inevitable that spinoff, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, a movie as bloated as that title and star Dwayne Johnson’s biceps, was destined to become an absurd action cartoon.

At this point, I don’t need a trailer to know I want to see Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. But that doesn’t mean this latest, and “final,” trailer doesn’t make me smile like a drooling idiot. Because it does. This is ridiculous, and I mean that as the highest praise. I didn’t stop grinning the whole time. Check it out below.

As the synopsis points out right out of the gate, from humble beginnings as a Point Break rip off, the Fast and Furious films have “amassed almost $5 billion worldwide” over the course of eight movies. Which is why Hobbs & Shaw, sorry, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw, exists in the first place, to put two popular secondary characters (and one notorious Vin Diesel beefer) together in one film and squeeze more cash from this particular stone. And I’m here for it. Watch the first trailer below and tell me you’re not, too.

'Skyscraper' (2018) Movie Review

Why not? I’ll watch a one-legged Dwayne Johnson dangle off of a burning building with Neve Campbell for 102 minutes. Sure, there’s more to Skyscraper than that, but not much. And that’s all that matters in what’s a serviceable, at times goofily over-the-top entertaining, at times dreadful and dreary Die-Hard-meets-Towering-Inferno riff. And I’m fairly certain the entire film was bankrolled by the Chinese duct tape industry. Seriously, the silver-backed tape has a much more significant presence than it has any right to.

'Rampage' (2018) Movie Review

Rampage, the latest opus of urban destruction from director Brad Peyton (San Andreas) and mega-star Dwayne Johnson, may legitimately be the stupidest movie I’ve ever seen. And I watched Air Bud last weekend for some reason. It’s also 100% the movie it looks like, with zero deviation. That’s not to say it’s without a certain level of fun, thanks almost entirely to The Rock, who does what The Rock does best. Only this time there are giant monsters, too. It’s somehow completely bonkers and totally forgettable in the same moment.

You know, sometimes I look at a certain movie and I think, “Did I make that?” Because I’m fairly certain I’m the only one who could possibly want to see it. And that’s the sensation I get watching the first trailer for Rampage. It stars Dwayne Johnson and a giant gorilla, a giant wolf, and a giant crocodile. And based on this first look, it’s already the greatest video game movie ever made.

'Baywatch' (2017) Movie Review

Baywatch can’t decide what movie it wants to be. Is it a foul-mouthed, satiric send up of the long-running cheeseball T&A fest (the easy comparison is 21 Jump Street)? Or is it an earnest action drama about a ragtag group of lifeguards becoming a family and saving their beach? If 2015’s Furious 7 was a bit too reserved and subdued—what with cars parachuting from cargo planes and leaping skyscraper to skyscraper—don’t worry, The Fate of the Furious, also known as the eighth Fast and Furious movie (AKA #F8), rectifies that with gleeful abandon. It walks a fine line between sheer idiocy and inspired brilliance, often leaping back and forth between the two, and represents a marked drop in quality in the franchise for the first time in almost a decade.

I don’t even know what they’re doing anymore, but hot damn do I love it. Seriously, there’s a submarine in a car chase, what more can a growing boy ask for?

But holy hell, whatever it is, I love the shit out of it.
